18:46 westbaystars: But am concentrating on the audiocast.
18:46 Deanna: Yeah, I know. I usually scan the posts the day after. Figured this might be my last chance to check out the chat.

18:48 westbaystars: Catch it live?
18:49 westbaystars: Yano draws a base on balls.

18:53 westbaystars: Serafini strikes out swinging on three pitches, one out.
18:56 westbaystars: Nishioka grounds the ball past a diving Sekimoto into right. Base hit.
18:58 westbaystars: I expectd a little more messing with the order, too. But Okada-kantoku doesn't seem to be a tinkerer.
19:00 Deanna: Heh
19:02 westbaystars: A LOT of throws over to first base. Count is 1 strike, 3 balls.
19:02 Deanna: Looks like the top of the first was just Nishioka grounding to short, Hori grounding to third, and Fukuura striking out.
19:03 Deanna: Oops on Nishioka.
19:03 westbaystars: Throw by Yano on the money to second, catching Nishioka trying to steal.
19:03 westbaystars: Hori walks on next pitch.
19:03 westbaystars: Fukuura hit by first pitch.
19:04 westbaystars: Yes, that was the first.
19:05 westbaystars: Saburo flies out to center on first pitch.
19:05 westbaystars: Side retired.
19:05 westbaystars: ---
19:05 westbaystars: --- Bottom of Third

19:05 westbaystars: ---
19:10 westbaystars: Sugiuchi strikes out swinging on full count. One out.
19:11 Deanna: Nope, Lotte haven't made any errors.
19:11 westbaystars: Error by Hori on Akahoshi grounder to second.
19:11 westbaystars: Thanks.
19:11 Deanna: Perhaps now would not be the time to mention that the 3-4-5 of Hanshin's lineup is collectively batting 4 for 34?
19:15 westbaystars: Toritani goes down swinging. Two down.
19:15 westbaystars: Akahoshi steals second easilly.
19:16 Deanna: Yay!
19:17 Deanna: well, yay on Franco's catch, that is!
19:17 westbaystars: Franco makes a diving catch in right. Three outs.
19:17 westbaystars: Quick recap of scoring:

19:33 Westbaystars: Hashimoto then fouls out to Imaoka at third.
19:33 Westbaystars: And Serafini strikes out swinging to end the inning.

19:36 toraintewig: YEAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
19:36 Westbaystars: Through the right side of the infield.
19:36 Deanna: Okay, make that 5 for 36, then

19:38 toraintewig: yeah, hes just in the wrong team
19:39 toraintewig: well i have tickets to go to koshien tmw, so...

19:41 Westbaystars: Imaoka grounds into a 5-4-3 double play.
19:41 toraintewig: i like japanese keyboards
19:41 Westbaystars: Spencer pops out to short in shallow left-center.
19:41 Westbaystars: Three up, three down.
19:41 toraintewig: hehe
19:41 lll: i still can't find the asterisk
19:42 toraintewig: ****

19:42 lll: i see it now thanks
19:43 toraintewig: but then i thought that in the sixth inning yest too
19:43 Deanna: heh
19:43 lll: wait til the 6th or 7th inning to comment on pitching
19:43 Deanna: you mean that seventh inning? that kept stretching?
19:43 toraintewig: nishioka at bat again
19:44 Deanna: it's almost 4am here, I really shouldn't be up, but this game compels me
19:44 Deanna: especially after the 14-inning sox-astros game today. I'll catch up on sleep in the postseason

19:49 toraintewig: 14 inning sox-astros game? i havent checked that out yet
19:49 Deanna: he hit fukuura AGAIN?
19:49 toraintewig: they need to be exceptional to shut out lottes batting

19:50 toraintewig: hes standing in the balls way
19:50 Westbaystars: The pitch was waaaay inside. Sorry.
19:51 Deanna: I shoulda said "fukuura got hit again" -- but yeah
19:51 toraintewig: excellent. saburo strike out.
19:51 Westbaystars: Saburo caught looking at strike three.
19:51 Westbaystars: Two away.
19:52 toraintewig: sorry, im not going to be a very balanced commentator
19:52 Deanna: heh, we can counterbalance each other
19:52 Westbaystars: That's OK. Add flavor.
19:54 toraintewig: yayyy
19:56 Westbaystars: Franco grounds out to third unassisted (taking the ball to third).
19:56 Westbaystars: And it sounds like Hori twisted his ancle going into third.

19:56 Westbaystars: --- Bottom of Fifth
19:56 Westbaystars: ---

19:56 Deanna: wasn't he already having back problems?
19:56 toraintewig: no that was fukuhara isnt it
19:57 Deanna: by the way, it is really bizarre hearing the yokohama music in the background of a Hanshin-Chiba game
19:57 toraintewig: gogo yano!
19:57 toraintewig: what channel are u watching??
19:57 toraintewig: yay!!!!!
19:57 Deanna: listening to westbay's netcast
19:57 Westbaystars: TBS.

19:58 Westbaystars: http://www.japanesebaseball.com:8000/live
19:58 toraintewig: (i actually didnt see that hit)
19:59 toraintewig: what program do u need for that? its not loading...
19:59 Westbaystars: I'm also listening to the radio at the same time.
20:00 toraintewig: i wonder why they keep making comments about gaikokujin no pictcher/senshuu
20:00 Deanna: wait, so where is the music in the background between innings coming from?
20:00 Deanna: tora - i've got it streaming in winamp
20:00 Westbaystars: Any MP3 streamer. iTunes or Windows Media Player should do.
20:01 Deanna: ah, yes, Heiuchi in for Hori, batting second, playing second
20:01 toraintewig: hm....doesnt seem to work. but its ok. i have TV
20:01 Westbaystars: Try taking the "live" off the end and clicking on the link there.
20:01 Westbaystars: If you have TV, you don't need it.
20:02 Deanna: yeah, lucky you. I couldn't find a net broadcast of this... I almost wish the Hawks or Lions had gotten there
20:02 Deanna: but not really, 'cause this is cooler.
20:03 toraintewig: yeah!
20:03 toraintewig: foul ball
20:03 toraintewig: tigers 1/2base
20:04 toraintewig: oh its still 0-out

20:09 Westbaystars: Inning over.
20:09 toraintewig: its okay. we still have....4 more innings!
20:09 toraintewig: what is a 4-6-3 double play
20:09 Westbaystars: Just when I mention how hard it is to double up Akahoshi, he's doubled up.
20:09 Deanna: second to shortstop to first
20:10 Westbaystars: Ground to second (4), toss to short (6), relay to first (3).
20:10 toraintewig: ahh
20:10 Deanna: that is, it's usually hit between first and second base, the second baseman throws it to the shortstop covering the bag,
20:10 toraintewig: 6 is short
20:10 Deanna: the shortstop throws it to first to nab the hitter.
20:10 Deanna: right. pitcher - catcher - first - second - third - short - left - center - right.
20:11 Westbaystars: ---
20:11 Westbaystars: --- Top of Fifth
20:11 Westbaystars: ---
20:11 Deanna: you didn't notice the big 6 over Toritani and the 5 over Imaoka on the scoreboard?
20:11 Westbaystars: --- Top of Sixth
20:11 Westbaystars: ---
20:12 toraintewig: haha
20:13 Deanna: damn
20:13 toraintewig: yay imae "fly"
20:13 toraintewig: (sorry, i learnt most of my baseball in japanese)
20:14 Deanna: Imae should still be able to finish the series above .500, though...
20:14 toraintewig: williams FINALLY
20:14 Deanna: tora -- that's ok. I think the only Japanese I use anymore is baseball-related
20:14 Deanna: oh, we're into JFK?
20:14 toraintewig: i dunno
20:14 Deanna: I was wondering when we'd see them in this series (besides that tiny bit of Fujikawa last night)
20:14 toraintewig: i have no idea what okadas game strategy is anymore
20:15 Deanna: me neither.
20:15 Westbaystars: He can't afford to give up any more runs.
20:15 Westbaystars: That's all.
20:15 Deanna: I guess the game's still close enough that it's worth it... unlike (sorry) these last few games
20:16 lll: what's the score now, 0-3?
20:16 Deanna: yup, still
20:17 toraintewig: and the 6th and 7th has been awful for the tigers
20:17 toraintewig: mamotte! mamotte!
20:19 Deanna: erm
20:19 toraintewig: YAYYY
20:20 toraintewig: i can finally say "nice defence"
20:20 Westbaystars: Lee doubles off the left-center field fense, but is throw out trying to streatch it into a triple.
20:20 toraintewig: niceniec
20:21 toraintewig: inning over...who was that?
20:21 Deanna: Hashimoto?
20:22 Deanna: that is, Hashimoto struck out
20:22 Deanna: hm, probly have Serafini pitch the bottom of the 6th, then pinch-hit for him. he's up to 80ish pitches?
20:23 toraintewig: toritani at bat
20:23 toraintewig: 6th bottom
20:24 toraintewig: uhm, "goro"?
20:24 toraintewig: nice, center hit by sheets
20:24 toraintewig: aniki! kanemoto up next
20:25 Deanna: maybe Kanemoto will get a... second hit!
20:25 toraintewig: that is the worst batting average ive ever seen for kanemoto
20:25 Westbaystars: Toritani grounds out to short for first out.
20:25 Westbaystars: Sheets hits comebacker up the middle, one on, one out.
20:27 toraintewig: foul ball!!!!
20:27 toraintewig: tigers 1st and 2nd
20:27 toraintewig: base, that is
20:28 Deanna: Kanemoto walks
20:28 Deanna: ("four ball", not "foul ball" but heh)
20:28 Westbaystars: Foaa ball. Not foul ball.
20:28 lll: booru
20:28 Westbaystars: Kanemoto draws a walk, and that's it for Serafini.
20:29 Deanna: yeah, Serafini was done anyway
20:29 Westbaystars: Ono comes in to the #8 spot to pitch.
20:29 Westbaystars: Satozaki comes in to the #9 spot to catch.
20:30 Westbaystars: Catcher Hashimoto comes out.
20:30 Deanna: ahh, that's not surprising
20:30 toraintewig: hahaha
20:30 Westbaystars: As does pitcher Serafini.
20:30 toraintewig: i swear they put an "r" sound
20:31 Westbaystars: It's hard to tell the difference between "four" and "foul" ball on the radio.
20:32 toraintewig: imaoka at bat
20:33 toraintewig: YOSSHHHH
20:33 toraintewig: IMAOKA delivers...!!
20:33 Deanna: damn
20:33 Deanna: let's see, the tigers have now scored as many runs in the whole series as the Marines have scored today
20:34 Deanna: Williams was put in Spencer's spot
20:35 toraintewig: WOOOOO
20:35 Deanna: wait
20:35 Deanna: no
20:35 Deanna: Fujihara was
20:35 toraintewig: !!!!
20:36 toraintewig: the tigers are finally....may i say, back?!!
20:36 lll: What happened?
20:36 Deanna: Heiuchi, not Horiuchi
20:36 toraintewig: consecutive middle hits by imaoka and hiyama
20:36 toraintewig: 3-2!!!!!
20:36 toraintewig: now YANOOO
20:37 toraintewig: YAYYYY

20:37 toraintewig: inning over
20:38 toraintewig: ok im going to run, my friends called me to watch with them...
20:38 Westbaystars: Back to back timelies by Imaoka and Hiyama.
20:38 Deanna: right right, when Fujihara came in he was put in batting 6th, Hamanaka came in batting ninth and playing RF
20:38 Westbaystars: Then Yano grounds into a double play to short.
20:38 Deanna: then Williams replaced Fujihara on the mound
20:38 Deanna: then Hiyama pinch-hit for Williams just now?
20:38 Westbaystars: Nishioka takes the ball to second himself for one, then throws to first.
20:38 Westbaystars: Inning over.

20:47 Westbaystars: You're right. It looks like a "hori."
20:47 Deanna: Kinda...
20:48 Deanna: I figured it's just so natural to say "Horiuchi" due to Tsuneo
20:48 Deanna: Oh and duh. Of course thinking "Hori" and then saying "Horiuchi"
20:49 Deanna: seeya tora
20:50 Deanna: Oh wow

21:08 Deanna: hmm, and I guess Kubota's probly warming up for the ninth?
21:09 Ken D.: Sorry I could not do play-by-play tonight. As you can see I've missed most of the game.
21:09 Westbaystars: Yabuta in to pitch for Chiba.
21:09 Westbaystars: That's OK.
21:09 Westbaystars: I could use the help, though.
21:10 Deanna: it's ok, I've been hanging around pretending to "help" in your stead
21:10 Ken D.: Looks like we've got our first close contest. Is it too late for the Tigers, though?
21:10 Ken D.: Thanks Deanna
21:10 Deanna: nah, very close, and the Tigers' bullpen is a shade better than the Marines...
21:11 Deanna: after all, Kobayashi did implode in the almost-sweep game 3 of the PL Second Stage. You never know.
21:11 Westbaystars: Deanna has been a great help with information gathering.
21:13 Westbaystars: Toritani draws a walk to lead off the inning.
21:13 Ken D.: For this series or overall?
21:13 Westbaystars: Sheets pops up a bunt right back to Yabuta on the mound.

Oh well, the Tigers woke somewhat from their slumber, but it was too little, too late. Congratulations to the Marines - it was a great Series for them and the Pacific League.

But the Central League has some soul searching to do. An article by Stephen Ellsesser in the Japan Times yesterday just about sums it up: The Central League needs playoffs. The Tigers were just too rusty. [Link]

Congratulations to the Marines. It was a great Series for them.

Though the Central League has to have playoffs. All that time without playoffs was bad for Hanshin. It was obvious by the 33-4 score difference. Hanshin was too tired in my opinion.

What a wonderful Series for the Marines. It was one of those things where everything went right for them, but they more than deserve to be the winners.

Once again, congratulations to the Marines fans around the world.

An excellent victory by the Marines.

However on the playoffs I beg to differ. In my opinion they have rendered the Pacific League a bit of a farce. What is clear is that the advantage lies with the team finishing second and not top of the Pacific League (both times the second place team has won). There is no real incentive to win the league - the supposed incentives do not translate into anything concrete given that the momentum lies with the team that wins the first round. However I forsee the Central League introducing a similar system.

How about just scrapping the playoffs and going into the Japan Series straightaway?

I think the league winner takes all system rewards consistency, and the Tigers definitely have the stronger hand there. Whereas in a certain sense, the playoff system rewards the more competitive, aggressive team, with a bit of luck thrown in, of course.

Which is why I wouldn't have liked a playoff for the Tigers. They were obviously the strongest and most consistent team in the Central League, but Chunichi showed more than once they knew how to upset them. Bobby Valentine probably studied those tapes well.

I don't agree with you on this. Having every home game is a pretty big incentive. Do you honestly think that Softbank would have pushed the series to 5 in either playoffs if they had to travel to Chiba or Saitama after being down two games to zero? The Hawks are a team that I'm guessing are well suited for long hauls but not for 5 or 7 game sets.

I do see the disadvantage with not having a playoff series. I think the Tigers weren't ready for the Nippon Series until the final game.

I can see your point, but the Hawks only avoided a 3-0 loss at home because Kobayashi got into a funk. This was with the home advantage. Home advantage is not such a big benefit at all - it didn't help the Tigers did it?
Pacific League Playoff System Revisited
[ Author: MHtrStevie | Posted: Oct 28, 2005 12:46 AM | CLM Fan ]

I was waiting for a while to respond to this topic, as I wanted to present more hard numbers with this. But I want to make my brief assessment of the PL playoff system.

I don't see any real advantage in finishing second during the regular season. The explanation for what has happened in the first two years of the PL playoffs exposes how a team wins the regular season, and whether or not that really makes them the best team in the league.

For both 2004 and 2005, look at the results of the regular season series between each team. You'll see that the reason in both years that the Hawks were on top was more because of their utter domination of the B-level teams rather than a great performance against the other A-level teams. This year, the Hawks/Marines season series was split right down the middle, so the way their playoff series went down is no surprise at all. In 2004, the Hawks actually lost their season series with Seibu! Again, no surprise why their playoff series went the way it did.

The Hawks were up on Lotte because they crushed Rakuten and Nippon Ham in a more lopsided manner, much like they were up on Seibu last year because of their annihilation of teams like Orix and Kintetsu.

In the end, though, the PL playoffs have represented a mini-version of the regular seasons. Both years, two teams have really been the top of the PL, and each year those teams got to decide it in a playoff. It's just been rough that the Hawks have lost two Game Fives. In no way does it show me that the system is broken, or that the PL representative was undeserving, or that the Hawks were cheated.

The first weakness of the system was exposed this year, that being the long layoff the CL champion has to endure before the Series starts. Last year they had it better. In that configuration, Chunichi only waited five days before the Series began, and we ended up with an epic 7-game nailbiter! But that year you also had regular-season CL games being played on the same day as Japan Series Game One. I think they overcompensated this year, and Hanshin ended up waiting more than two weeks to play another game. The result is how you see it - but there has to be a way to solve that scheduling problem, even if the CL doesn't want a playoff.

The bigger looming issue still hasn't been exposed: what if a below 0.500 team gets into the PL playoffs and winds up in the Japan Series? When that happens, let me know and I'll join the anti-playoff brigade - because so far these playoffs have only increased my enjoyment of NPB!

OK, that wasn't really brief, gomenasai!

- I don't see any real advantage in finishing second during the regular season.

The advantage lies in more match practice - the second place team has an extra 3 game series in which to prepare.

- For both 2004 and 2005, look at the results of the regular season series between each team.

This is perhaps an irrelevant point - there are six teams in each league, and it is your performance against all of them that is important. The reason Seibu and Lotte finished behind the Hawks was because they couldn't beat the B level teams as much.

- In the end, though, the PL playoffs have represented a mini-version of the regular seasons. Both years, two teams have really been the top of the PL, and each year those teams got to decide it in a playoff. It's just been rough that the Hawks have lost two Game Fives.

They haven't really represented any aspect of the regular season. It has really damaged the credibility of the Pacific League that the second place team has won. Any victory by the third place team will shatter this credibility.

- In no way does it show me that the system is broken, or that the PL representative was undeserving, or that the Hawks were cheated.

This is just the problem - the Hawks won the league but were robbed of it twice by the playoffs. A points system which is normally used to score for a league system would have exposed this more clearly. Winning a series against one club is irrelevant - it is your performance against all that is important. The Pacific League has failed to understand this and is in danger of becoming more irrelevant.

OK, three points and then I'm done with the discussion (maybe):
  1. The Hawks weren't robbed, they were beaten on the field. Their field. They had every chance to win against the Marines and Lions and they couldn't do it. Actually, all they had to do was hold for a tie in the final game and they couldn't get it done.

  2. The Pacific league has been the weak sister in terms of prestige and credibility from the start. If anything, the playoffs have helped, not hurt, the credibility of the Pacific league. They were hard fought matches with displays of class by everybody involved. This year, Orix was relevant. Last year, Nippon Ham was a good story. Lotte, who has been bottom table for years, was a great story. We wouldn't have had this without the playoffs. In my opinion, the CL was the big joke. The top two teams, Hanshin (yours) and Chunichi (mine) couldn't handle the bottom barrel teams until the very end. Exciting playoffs don't kill credibility.

  3. Lackluster performances in games that matter do. The CL has lost both series since the playoffs have been installed. Hanshin was downright embarrassing in this Series. I'm glad Chunichi didn't go because it might have been even worse.

Perhaps robbed was a bit too strong a term. But Hawks did not receive their deserved award.

However, as to credibility, it is currently very difficult to get any sponsor to associate with the Pacific League playoffs. They are not seen as a credible system except by the teams' fans. So as far as most of Japan is concerned they are pretty irrelevant. Remember, no major TV channel bothered to show most of the playoffs this year. Where the Pacific League can build credibility is in the Inter-league games, which are seen as very interesting.

This should not be seen as a comment on the quality of the baseball played in the Pacific League, just an illustration of how the two leagues are viewed.

- ... but the Hawks only avoided a 3-0 loss at home because Kobayashi got into a funk.

And why did that happen? Perhaps the crowd got to him. And then the Hawks batted second, which can make a difference in close games. Home advantage in action.

And what home advantage did the Tigers have in the Nippon Series? Lotte hosted the first two, and it appears that the momentum from those two big wins made them unbeatable even at Koshien.

If we're talking about a CL playoff along the same lines as the Pacific League setup, the Tigers would have needed to win only 2 out of 5 (due to their regular season result), all played at home. Remember also that the Hawks would have won their playoff, too, if they had been in the same position as the Tigers, but they didn't finish strongly enough in the regular season to be eligible for that one-game advantage.
Congratulations Lotte!

Well done to Bobby V. and all the Lotte players on a magnificent Series win!

Nice to see Lotte break their 30-odd year drought and also good to see one of the smaller teams getting some shine.
