New Manrui Otoko

New Manrui Otoko
Orix Blue Wave's veteran Fujii Yasuo hit his 12th career grand slam home run last night (6/2) to pull ahead of the 5th ranked (now 6th) group at 11 and join former Lotte Etoh Shinichi (?) and current Hanshin manager Nomura tied for 3rd place.

Among current players, Yakult's Ikeyama and Kintetsu's Nakamura both have 10 career home runs,
Nakamura
hitting one just a few days ago
.

Fujii is in pretty good company as the only two players ahead of are are Komada, who retired last year after hitting a career 13 grand slams, including one his first professional at bat to become the Marui Otoko ("Bases Loaded Man"), and Oh, the home run king of the world and now manager of the defending Pacific League champion Fukuoka Daiei Hawks.  (Think of how many Oh could have hit if he wasn't intentionally walked with bases loaded on a number of occasions.)

Fujii, coming into the season, had a lifetime batting average of .257 with 266 home runs and 810 RBIs in 1,500 games over 14 years.  Fujii isn't playing full time this season, only batting .129.

Despite not playing full time, his pinch hit home run last night was his 8th home run of the season, putting the game at Green Stadium Kobe out of reach over Nippon Ham, 11-4, which was the final.

About

This is a site about Pro Yakyu (Japanese Baseball), not about who the next player to go over to MLB is. It's a community of Pro Yakyu fans who have come together to share their knowledge and opinions with the world. It's a place to follow teams and individuals playing baseball in Japan (and Asia), and to learn about Japanese (and Asian) culture through baseball.

It is my sincere hope that once you learn a bit about what we're about here that you will join the community of contributors.
