Yomiuri Clinches CL Pennant
The Yomiuri Giants have clinched their first CL title since 2002, with a 5-4 win over the Yakult Swallows after pinch hitter Takayuki Shimizu hit a sayonara (walk off) infield single.

With the win, Yomiuri will face the winner of the Chunichi-Hanshin series in the second round of the Climax Series.

The above Japan Ball article mentions that the Giants get an automatic win in Stage Two, yet I have not been able to confirm that with any Japanese sources. In fact, today's Nikkan Sports (paper version) shows the schedule with five games at Tokyo Dome. If the Giants got a free win, the maximum number of games would be four.

I think that the writer at Kyodo News got this fact wrong.

In the meantime, the BayStars got their revenge last night and knocked the Tigers out of contention to host either Stage, shutting the Tigers out 5-0. The Central League final standings are now in place for the top four teams:
  1. Giants
  2. Chunichi
  3. Hanshin
  4. Yokohama
Hiroshima and Yakult are still battling it out to see who winds up in the cellar.

The PL's 2006 system (automatic one-game advantage to the first seed, and playing Stage Two's Games 3 and 4 at the second seed's park) is history. In each league, there is no prior advantage and all games are at the 1st seed's park.
