2007 Nippon Series: Game 5

Discussion in the NPB News forum
2007 Nippon Series: Game 5
The Chunichi Dragons will host the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters for Game 5 of the 2007 Nippon Series this evening.

The time: 6:10 pm JST [World Clock - check for time in your area]
The place: Play by play chat room - live from Nagoya Dome

The starting pitchers for tonight need no introduction: ace Kawakami Kenji Kenshin for the Chunichi Dragons vs. ace Darvish Yu for the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters. Kawakami took the loss in Game 1, allowing 3 runs on just 2 hits. Darvish got to win, holding the Dragons to just 1 run on 4 hits.

Of historical note, please compare the similarities between the 2006 and 2007 Nippon Series:
                  2006 2007
Game Dragons Fighters Dragons Fighters
---- ------------- ----------- ----------- -----------

1 Kawakami 4 - 2 Darvish Kawakami 1 - 3 Darvish
2 M. Yamamoto 2 - 5 Yagi Nakata 8 - 1 Glynn
3 Asakura 1 - 6 M. Takada Asakura 9 - 1 Takeda
4 Nakata 0 - 3 Kanemura Suzuki 4 - 2 Yoshikawa
5 Kawakami 1 - 4 Darvish Kawakami ? - ? Darvish
Does anybody else see symmetry? A pattern forming?

There's a very strong symmetry, it even what looks to be an exact mirror image showing a reversal of fortune. Very interesting. :]

But what does it actually signify in terms of predicting what will happen in Game 5 this year?

One interpretation of the pattern, purely as a pattern, is that the exact opposite of 2006 has happened in games 1-4, so it will happen in Game 5 as well. I just don't buy that theory. Game 5 will be decided by the players in my opinion, and not pre-ordained by fate.

But the pattern also seems to me to highlight two things
  1. The first emphasizes the importance of game location. One way the pattern can be explained is to say that the teams are so evenly matched that home field is the decisive factor.

Personally, I doubt that to be the deciding factor. At this championship level with the confidence that comes from having won last year. I think that the Ham Fighters are fairly comfortable at Nayoga Stadium.

  2. The other thing it seems to show is that by the time one of the teams is losing 3-1 in the Series, they are so demoralized that they will not win the 5th game.

Now that's an intriguing idea, especially when you consider it in terms of the starting pitcher's morale. I don't know enough about Kawakami Kenji's Kenshin's personality, so I can't comment on that. But I've been reading up about Yu Darvish. I don't think that that he will be demoralized. I think that he will simply focus and concentrate.
To me the decisive factor will still be what it was in the other games. The Dragon's batters are superior, their pitchers are inferior. The Ham Fighter's pitchers and fielding are superior, their batters are inferior.

How does that impact on Game 5? I think that Darvish will pull off the win against the superior batters again in this Series. If he can keep Chunichi's batters in check, or at least down to 1 or 2 runs in the early innings, I think that the Ham Fighters will be able to score enough to win the game.

Also, I can't put my finger on it exactly, but the Dragon's batting seems to me to be weakening against the Ham Fighter pitchers. They very barely pulled off the win in Game 4. The Ham Fighters' batters did battle back. The Dragons' batters are starting to disappoint, especially in the late innings.

So, while this pattern of symmetry is interesting, I think the decisive difference between last year and this year is that Chunichi's batting has been stronger this year, so far. But the Ham Fighter pitchers seem to be adjusting.

I think Yu Darvish will win Game 5 this year.

That's just my humble opinion, and I am certainly no expert on Pro Yakyu. :]

Here is the key matchup to this contest (and the other two games), one that transcends the game: Chunichi pitchers vs. the demons of the franchise's past. (The lineup can at least score some runs, as they've shown in the previous games. Now the question is, can the Dragons' pitchers keep the Fighters' bats cold?)

As we all know, the Dragons haven't won it all in 53 years. They need to close this one out tonight, or doubt will start to creep into the heads of the team - and the fans. (Insert joke about doubt always being in my head here. )

Just remember, the Cleveland Indians were in the same spot a couple weeks ago as the Dragons are now. But this is the chance the Dragons were looking for, one game to close it all out at home, and one win to erase all the demons of the past.

Meanwhile, the Fighters know they can count on Darvish. But how many runs will the Fighters need to score for him to win? 2? 3? It's up to the hitters to turn the tide, as Darvish (and the rest of the pitching staff for subsequent games) can't do it alone.

And yes, I sense a little role reversal from last year. Last year the Dragons' bats were completely shut down, this year it's the Fighters. There are a couple articles (that have nothing to do with NPB) that I want to bring up, but I don't want to bring them up prematurely.

(Can you tell I'm in "no-hitter in progress" mode? )

OK, now that the Dragons have won, here are the two articles:
  • Bill Simmons: Levels of Losing 2.0.

I think this falls under "Role Reversal" for the Fighters. They owned the Dragons (4-2 last year in inter-league, won the 2006 NS in 5 games, 3-1 this year in inter-league), and Chunichi turned the tables in this Series.

  • Bill Simmons: Ewing Theory 101

I think Kosuke Fukudome fits under this category. Kosuke, I love you man, but you've just been Ewing Theory'ed.

Hey, guys? Who's this Kawakami Kenji person? Is he like the evil twin cousin of Kawakami Kenshin, the guy who's a starting pitcher for Chunichi?

You do like to chide and correct, don't you Deanna?

Correction Police, do your duty! Don't just mock the Guest, give him the correct spelling.

At least he gave an opinion on Game 5. What's your's, hmmn?

Early reports are that it is Daisuke Yamai starting for the Dragons tonight, not Kenshin. I personally think this would be a better option, but will certainly not be disappointed if Kawakami is announced at around 5:30.

Got to get to the game now, enjoy!

18:06 Beethoven: Good evening everyone. :]
18:06 Beethoven: and that includes you, westbaystarts-san. LOL
18:06 westbaystars: Salutations.
18:06 westbaystars: Who are you going for tonight?
18:07 westbaystars: And does the pitching change for Chunichi change anything?
18:07 Deanna: Hey, Yamai is a lot better than you give him credit for
18:07 Beethoven: Tonight, I'm for the Ham Fighters
18:08 Deanna: I think I actually saw 3 of Yamai's victories in person this year. Maybe I should be in Nagoya
18:08 westbaystars: My main complaint is that Kawakami didn't get enough credit for his first outing, I guess.
18:08 Deanna: I do agree with you there
18:09 Deanna: But, I think they are saving Kenshin for game 6 if they don't win tonight. Why waste him against Darvish?
18:09 westbaystars: It is a good move, though, if the Series goes back to Hokkaido.
18:09 Beethoven: Yes that 21 batters retired in a row was really something!
18:09 Deanna: I make fun of Ochiai all the time, but he's pretty smart. I think he likes to hide behind that poker face
18:09 westbaystars: My thought exactly.
18:10 westbaystars: You mean his laughter when his team is down?
18:10 westbaystars: Does Yamai really need those sun glasses inside the Dome at night?
18:10 Deanna: He always looks like he doesn't care.
18:12 westbaystars: ---
18:12 westbaystars: Top of 1st
18:12 westbaystars: ---
18:12 westbaystars: Morimoto stands in.
18:12 Beethoven: Aha!
18:12 westbaystars: The first pitch by Yamai is over the inside part of the plate, called strike one.
18:12 westbaystars: Second offering misses down low. 1 and 1.
18:13 westbaystars: Third pitch is grounded to the left side.
18:13 westbaystars: Unline last night, Ibata takes his time and throws a strike to Woods at first.
18:13 westbaystars: And the first batter is retired.
18:13 westbaystars: That brings up K. Tanaka.
18:14 westbaystars: First offering from Yamai just misses outside, ball one.
18:14 westbaystars: Second pitch is swung on and fouled off to the left side. 1 and 1.
18:14 westbaystars: Yamai has a good pace on the mound.
18:14 westbaystars: Third offering is fouled off and out of play to the left side.
18:14 westbaystars: Fourth pitch should have been called strike three.
18:15 westbaystars: Called ball two low and away?
18:15 westbaystars: Tanishige came up from that ready to throw to third.
18:15 westbaystars: The 2-2 offering is swung on and missed, two down.
18:15 Beethoven: Hi Dodgers/Mariners. :]
18:15 westbaystars: That brings up Inaba.
18:16 Dodgers/Mariners: Hello Beethoven
18:16 westbaystars: First offering to Inaba is taken on the outside corner for strike one called.
18:16 westbaystars: Second offering called strike two.
18:16 westbaystars: Inaba is 1 for 14 so far this Series.
18:16 westbaystars: Takes the third pitch for ball one.
18:17 westbaystars: Fourth pitch misses outside, evening the count at 2 and 2.
18:17 Dodgers/Mariners: I like Game 7's
18:17 westbaystars: Fifth pitch is grounded to Araki at second.
18:17 westbaystars: He almost runs the ball to the first base bag himself, but finally tosses it to Woods.
18:17 westbaystars: Three up, three down for the Fighters in the first.
18:17 Beethoven: Me too, D/M
18:17 Dodgers/Mariners: Off Seasons without Pro baseball are no fun
18:18 westbaystars: ---
18:18 westbaystars: Bottom of 1st
18:18 westbaystars: ---
18:18 Beethoven: Hello there abc. :]
18:18 westbaystars: There's still the Asian Series coming up this month.
18:18 abc: hey beethoven
18:19 Dodgers/Mariners: Yes, that will be fun
18:19 Beethoven: heyas abc, who you rooting for?
18:19 Dodgers/Mariners: I went to a few games last year
18:19 westbaystars: Darvish takes the mound for the Fighters.
18:19 Beethoven: that must've been fun!
18:19 Beethoven: Big moment here!!
18:19 westbaystars: Araki is swinging at the first pitch, lifting it to right field.
18:20 Deanna: Yeah, I've got tickets to the finale of the Konami Cup. Looking forward to it
18:20 abc: i'm rooting for the Dragons
18:20 Beethoven: Are they playing any music for him?
18:20 westbaystars: Inaba comes in, camps under the ball, and makes the catch for out number one.
18:20 westbaystars: One pitch, one out.
18:20 Dodgers/Mariners: Yes, Japan vs. Korea was like crazy
18:20 abc: im a Dodger fan for mlb, and La New Bears fan for CPBL
18:20 westbaystars: Ibata follows taking the first pitch at the letters for strike one.
18:20 Deanna: oh, I was thinking Japan vs. Taiwan last year
18:20 Deanna: that was fantastic
18:20 baekgom: Hey everyone. So when is the first game of the Asian series?
18:21 westbaystars: Second offering misses outside. 1 and 1.
18:21 Deanna: it's next Thursday
18:21 Deanna: the games are 11/8, 9, 10, 11
18:21 westbaystars: 149 kph outside, ball two.
18:21 baekgom: Oh, that's pretty soon. What's the coverage like outside of Japan?
18:21 westbaystars: Next pitch down the middle just above the knees, 2 and 2.
18:22 Deanna: lousy
18:22 Dodgers/Mariners: Can I ask a Seibu question or is that not allowed tonight ?
18:22 Beethoven: Hey baekgom. :]
18:22 westbaystars: Darvish then gets Ibata swinging weakly at a pitch outside.
18:22 Christopher: Good evening everyone
18:22 westbaystars: Two quick outs.
18:22 Beethoven: All questions allowed, I think. :]
18:22 Deanna: I basically followed the Sportsnavi box score to look at the game last year
18:22 Deanna: what about Seibu? they suck
18:22 Dodgers/Mariners: Is it true that Cabrera and the Lions are done ??
18:22 Beethoven: Yep, westbaystars, Pretty impressive so far.
18:23 westbaystars: First pitch to Morino is fouled off and out of play. Strike one.
18:23 baekgom: Hmm.
18:23 westbaystars: Second offering misses up and away, 1 and 1.
18:23 baekgom: I wonder if it's on Korean online TV or radio. I'm actually an SK Wyverns fan.
18:23 westbaystars: That's a tough question. I haven't seen anything definate one way or the other.
18:23 westbaystars: Regarding Cabrera and the Lions.
18:24 Christopher: That's what the reports are saying though
18:24 westbaystars: Two pitches later, Morino goes down swinging at a low and away pitch.
18:24 Deanna: I would say, wait until after the Series to find out on Cabrera
18:24 westbaystars: First inning takes all of 12 minutes to complete scoreless.
18:24 westbaystars: ---
18:24 westbaystars: Top of 2nd
18:24 westbaystars: ---
18:24 Dodgers/Mariners: Say it isn't sooooooooooo.
18:25 Deanna: ok, I'm gonna go upstairs and try to catch this game on my keitai TV for a bit before my break ends
18:25 westbaystars: Wyverns did pretty well there in post season.
18:25 Deanna: go fighters!
18:25 Beethoven: Hello ippo. :]
18:25 Dodgers/Mariners: I hope they will spend the money and invest in Rameriz from Yakult if they get rid of Cabby
18:25 Beethoven: Go Fighters!
18:26 westbaystars: The main problem between Cabu-chan and the Lions is that he's gotten too expensive and hasn't produce like he used to.
18:26 westbaystars: Seguignol leads off the second.
18:26 ippo: hey guys
18:26 westbaystars: But Cabrera's ego hasn't deflated enough to accept a large pay decrease, I fear.
18:27 Dodgers/Mariners: I am a big fan of his but I have to agree the numbers are down a bit and he has been a little injury prone
18:27 westbaystars: A strike followed by a pair of balls to Seguignol.
18:27 torakichi: That was the first time this series that a run hasn't been scored in the first inning.
18:27 westbaystars: Fourth offering swung on and missed. Two and two.
18:27 baekgom: Yeah they did in the end. I will be interested to see how they come up against the winner of this series
18:27 westbaystars: Fifth offering as well, Seggy goes down swinging.
18:27 torakichi: I'm tempted to say it might also be the first time the game wasn't won in the 1st.
18:28 westbaystars: Strike out number two for Yamai, the Dragons' starter this evening.
18:28 westbaystars: That brings up Kudoh.
18:28 Beethoven: OOOH! This is the quite the battle, here.
18:28 westbaystars: Two quick strikes on the left fielder.
18:28 westbaystars: Next offering misses high and away, ball one.
18:29 ippo: thats right torakichi, i thought there would be a score in the 1st innings
18:29 Dodgers/Mariners: Im going to root for Darvish to have a good game tonight as I really want a game 7
18:29 westbaystars: Next offering is a high bounder over Nori's head at third.
18:29 Beethoven: Hey torakichi! You beat me to it. Where's the 1st inning fireworks?
18:29 westbaystars: But he jumps, fields the ball on the third base bag, and throws across in time for the out.
18:29 westbaystars: Two quick outs here in the second.
18:29 westbaystars: That brings up Inada.
18:30 westbaystars: Two quick strikes on Inada.
18:30 westbaystars: Yamai doing well to get ahead in the count.
18:30 westbaystars: Third offering just misses a hair outside. Ball one.
18:30 westbaystars: And Inada goes down swinging on an inside pitch.
18:31 Christopher: Yamai is pitching like a demon so far
18:31 westbaystars: The Fighters are retired six in a row now.
18:31 westbaystars: And we still have no score.
18:31 westbaystars: ---
18:31 ippo: bottom of 2nd now westbaystars?
18:31 Dodgers/Mariners: Wish I could stay and chat more but I must goto work, Thank you for the answer to my questions
18:32 westbaystars: ---
18:32 Beethoven: Hi Christopher! Another real pitchers' duel.
18:32 Dodgers/Mariners: Go Ham !!!
18:32 Beethoven: See you again D/M
18:32 westbaystars: Have a good day at work. Drop by from time to time.
18:33 westbaystars: Woods stands in.
18:33 torakichi: Speaking of work, better do some....
18:33 westbaystars: He's swinging at the first pitch, lifting the ball to foul territory on the first base side.
18:33 westbaystars: Seguignol gives chance.
18:34 westbaystars: But the ball drifts into the stands.
18:34 westbaystars: Ippo-san, you asked a question that got garbled?
18:34 Beethoven: Well, at least he connected, this time.
18:34 westbaystars: Two pitches later Woods drills the first hit of the night through the left side.
18:34 westbaystars: That was probably the best hit I'd seen Woods get this Series.
18:35 ippo: nah its cool
18:35 Beethoven: It took him long enough...no offense.
18:35 westbaystars: That brings up Nakamura.
18:35 westbaystars: Hitting close to .500 for the Series.
18:35 Beethoven: Woods, not you ippo. LOL
18:36 westbaystars: Two quick strikes on Nakamura.
18:36 Beethoven: Darvish is really going straight at them, isn't he?
18:36 westbaystars: Nakamura hits the third offering hard to right.
18:36 westbaystars: It's going to be trouble!
18:37 westbaystars: The ball bounces in the warning track in right-center, one bounds to the wall.
18:37 westbaystars: Woods heads into third while Nori has a stand up double.
18:37 westbaystars: That puts runners at second and third with nobody out.
18:37 westbaystars: Lee coming up.
18:37 westbaystars: Lee is swinging at the first pitch, missing it in the dirt.
18:38 westbaystars: Second offering is fouled off at the plate.
18:38 westbaystars: Lee is 2 for 15 with a home run and 5 RBIs in the Series.
18:38 Beethoven: behind quickly..
18:39 westbaystars: A lot of runs for a couple of hits.
18:39 westbaystars: Strike three.
18:39 westbaystars: Strike out number 3 for Darvish tonight.
18:40 Beethoven: One down...
18:40 westbaystars: What do you all think? 2 and inning? Break his record of 13 in Game 1?
18:40 westbaystars: First pitch is in there for a called strike one to Hirata.
18:40 westbaystars: Second offering is just a little low. 1 and 1 the count.
18:40 westbaystars: Runners at second and third, one out, Hirata at the plate.
18:41 westbaystars: Darvish and Tsuruoka having a hard time communicating.
18:41 westbaystars: Tsuruoka heads out to talk with Darvish.
18:41 westbaystars: The 1-1 offering is swung on and grounded foul, past the third base side dugout.
18:42 westbaystars: Fourth offering is lifted deep to right.
18:42 westbaystars: That's enough to score a run.
18:42 westbaystars: Woods scores from third on the sacrifice fly.
18:42 westbaystars: And the Dragons are on the board first.
18:42 westbaystars: Nori heads to third.
18:43 westbaystars: That brings up Tanishige.
18:43 westbaystars: Weak during the season, but strong in post season.
18:43 westbaystars: Well, 3 for 13, but with 3 big RBIs.
18:43 ippo: what'd you guys reckon, will there be alot of runs this game?
18:43 westbaystars: Can't check his swing on the outside pitch in the dirt.
18:44 westbaystars: Second offering misses outside. 1 and 1.
18:44 westbaystars: I don't expect many runs. But anything can happen.
18:44 Blue Iguana: Score?
18:44 westbaystars: Next offering swung on and missed, strike two.
18:44 westbaystars: 1 - 0 Dragons.
18:44 westbaystars: Just scored Woods on a sacrifice fly.
18:45 Christopher: Tight game
18:45 westbaystars: Foul ball. Count remains 2 strikes and a ball.
18:45 westbaystars: Next offering is called strike three.
18:45 westbaystars: That's two strike outs per inning through two for Darvish.
18:45 westbaystars: But he falls behind after two complete by a score of 1-0.
18:45 westbaystars: ---
18:46 westbaystars: Top of 3rd
18:46 westbaystars: ---
18:46 Blue Iguana: Is there a live stream to this game? I used to live in Nagoya and want to watch!
18:47 westbaystars: The Fighters will be sending up numbers 7, 8, and 9 in the third.
18:47 westbaystars: Kaneko, Tsuruoka, and Darvish.
18:48 westbaystars: Not that I'm aware of. Some things progress. Others degress.
18:48 westbaystars: Yamai, starting Game 5 for the Dragons, throws the first pitch to Kaneko, missing inside for ball one.
18:48 westbaystars: Second offering catches the inside corner, 1 and 1.
18:49 westbaystars: Third offering is grounded to Araki at second.
18:49 westbaystars: The vacuum gloved second baseman fields the ball and throws to first for out number one.
18:49 westbaystars: That brings up Tsuruoka.
18:50 westbaystars: First pitch over for a strike. Second misses low and away for a ball.
18:50 westbaystars: The third offering is lifted to shallow right-center.
18:50 westbaystars: Lee comes over and in to make the catch for out number two.
18:50 westbaystars: That brings up Darvish.
18:50 westbaystars: The new prince of Hokkaido.
18:50 westbaystars: He takes the first pitch for strike one.
18:51 westbaystars: Standing back and stepping out, takes the second pitch outside for ball two.
18:51 westbaystars: And Yamai misses up high for ball two.
18:51 westbaystars: That was balls 1 and 2. My miss.
18:51 Deanna: man, that was sad. I got to watch like 15 mins of the game and the Dragons scored a run
18:51 westbaystars: The fourth offering is fouled off and out of play.
18:51 Deanna: and yes, Yamai looks REALLY funny with those sunglasses. I love it
18:51 westbaystars: And Darvish grounds the fifth pitch back to Yamai.
18:51 westbaystars: Who throws to first for the final out of the inning.
18:52 westbaystars: 9 up, 9 down for the Fighters through 3.
18:52 westbaystars: Are you sure we're not seeing Kawakami?
18:52 westbaystars: ---
18:53 westbaystars: Bottom of 3rd
18:53 westbaystars: ---
18:53 Christopher: Daily Sports had him in for Game 6
18:53 Christopher: Not 100% reliable outside Tigers but seems to have been correct this time
18:54 westbaystars: Yamai leads off the Dragons' third, taking strike one down the middle.
18:54 westbaystars: He had 3 hits during the regular season.
18:55 westbaystars: After taking ball one, Yamai drills the ball to the right side.
18:55 westbaystars: Tanaka makes a back handed grab going toward left.
18:55 westbaystars: Come up, throws to first in time for out number one.
18:55 westbaystars: Good play by Kensuke to keep that from being a hit.
18:56 westbaystars: Araki takes the first pitch this time for strike one.
18:56 westbaystars: Breaks his bat on the second pitch, grounding out to Inada at third.
18:56 westbaystars: Two quick outs this inning.
18:56 westbaystars: Ibata stands in with two down and nobody on.
18:57 westbaystars: First pitch is lined up the left field line and into the corner.
18:57 westbaystars: Ibata trots on around to second base standing up.
18:57 westbaystars: Two out double for Morino.
18:58 westbaystars: First pitch is in the dirt, blocked by Tsuruoka.
18:58 westbaystars: Morino struck out his first at bat.
18:58 westbaystars: The second offering by Darvish is down the pipe. 1 and 1.
18:59 westbaystars: Morino drove in the only run against Darvish in Game 1 with a sacrifice fly.
18:59 westbaystars: Fourth offering called strike two, bringing the count to 2 and 2.
19:00 westbaystars: Next pitch inside and in the dirt is swung on and missed, strike three.
19:00 westbaystars: Tsuruoka grabs the ball and touches Morino out before he gets out of the batter's bos.
19:00 westbaystars: And the side is retired.
19:00 westbaystars: After three complete, the Dragons continue to lead by a score of 1-0.
19:01 westbaystars: ---
19:01 westbaystars: Top of 4th
19:01 westbaystars: ---
19:02 westbaystars: Morimoto leads off the fourth against Yamai.
19:03 westbaystars: First pitch is taken down the middle for strike one.
19:03 westbaystars: Second offering misses high. 1 and 1.
19:03 westbaystars: Third pitch is grounded to the right of second base.
19:03 westbaystars: Araki dives for the ball.
19:03 westbaystars: Gets it.
19:04 westbaystars: Fires to first from the ground.
19:04 westbaystars: In time to get the speedy Hichori.
19:04 Christopher: Fielding is sharp from both sides today! Awesome by Araki
19:04 Firearm: whew!
19:04 westbaystars: Can you say Golden Glove infield?
19:04 Firearm: 1-0 lead? That isn't going to be easy to hang onto.
19:05 westbaystars: Tanaka attempts a push bunt up the third base side.
19:05 Beethoven: Hi Firearm...Yes 1-0
19:05 westbaystars: But pops it up high enough for Nori to catch it in foul territory midway to home for out number two.
19:05 westbaystars: That brings up Inaba.
19:05 westbaystars: Taking strike one at the knees on the inside part of the plate.
19:05 Firearm: hah! SWERVE!
19:06 westbaystars: Yamai is really going after the hitters quickly.
19:06 westbaystars: The second offering is grounded to Ibata at short.
19:06 westbaystars: And the side is retired in 3 minutes.
19:06 Firearm: so the Dragons did indeed pull a fast one on the Fighters?
19:06 westbaystars: That's 12 Fighters in a row now.
19:07 Firearm: I think Kenshin will come in if the Dragons pull a bigger lead, somehow
19:07 westbaystars: ---
19:07 westbaystars: Bottom of 4th
19:07 westbaystars: ---
19:08 Loudermilk: Kattobase Dragons!
19:08 westbaystars: That's an interesting scenario. Use Kawakami in relief to guarantee the win?
19:08 westbaystars: The Dragons send up Woods, Nori, and Lee this inning.
19:08 westbaystars: This combination scored the only run of the game in the second.
19:09 Firearm: Westbay, not now
19:09 Firearm: not while Yamai's pe--er... pitching well
19:09 westbaystars: Woods led off with a base hit, Nori doubled, and after Lee struck out, Hirata hit a sacrifice fly to right.
19:09 westbaystars: That's been the only scoring so far.
19:09 Firearm: but yeah, if this lead goes to 2-3 runs, bring in Kenshin to get to Iwase? I can see that happening.
19:10 westbaystars: 2 and 2 the count to Woods.
19:10 westbaystars: Change up in the dirt, Woods not going for it.
19:10 westbaystars: Full count.
19:10 Dave R: Good (whatever time if the day it is to you)
19:10 Firearm: morning for me!
19:10 westbaystars: Woods' hit in the second seemed to be the best he'd gotten wood on the ball all Series.
19:11 Dave R: I've been watching on NHK World again, but once again they cut to the 7:00 news
19:11 westbaystars: He grounds the full count pitch up the middle, base hit.
19:11 westbaystars: Woods is 2 for 2 tonight.
19:11 Firearm: no doubt the Fighters pitchers have intentionally kept the ball low for Tyrone
19:11 Dave R: The Fighter hitting is even flatter tonight, if that was possible
19:11 westbaystars: A generic "Salutations" should work fine.
19:11 westbaystars: That brings up Nakamura.
19:12 westbaystars: He doubled to right-center in the second, setting up the sac fly.
19:12 westbaystars: 8 for 16, 0 home run, 4 RBIs in the Series.
19:12 westbaystars: Takes the second pitch down the middle to even the count at 1 and 1.
19:13 Firearm: Nori is due!
19:13 westbaystars: Third offering is grounded to the left side.
19:13 westbaystars: Kaneko to Tanaka to Seguignol.
19:13 Firearm: eep, double play
19:13 westbaystars: 6-4-3 double play.
19:13 westbaystars: Not this time.
19:13 westbaystars: That brings up Lee, who was completely baffled by Darvish his first at bat.
19:14 westbaystars: 1 and 1 goes the count on a swing and miss.
19:14 westbaystars: Third offering down low, swung on and missed, strike two.
19:14 westbaystars: The fourth offering is grounded right to Seguignol at first.
19:15 westbaystars: He tosses to Darvish covering, and the side is retired in order for the first time tonight.
19:15 westbaystars: No, the second time tonight.
19:15 westbaystars: The Dragons went in order in the first.
19:15 westbaystars: After four complete now, the Dragons hold on to a 1-0 lead.

19:16 Loudermilk: No live internet stream?
19:17 westbaystars: Not to my knowledge.
19:17 westbaystars: Seguignol leads off the fifth.
19:17 westbaystars: Yamai's first offering catches the inside corner for a called strike one.
19:17 westbaystars: Seggy batting left vs. the right handed Yamai.
19:17 westbaystars: The second offering is grounded to the right side.
19:18 westbaystars: Araki comes in to field the ball, and throws to first for out number one.
19:18 westbaystars: Taking two quick strikes.
19:18 westbaystars: Third offering misses down low.
19:19 westbaystars: After fouling one off to the left side, Kudoh grounds the ball to the right side.
19:19 westbaystars: Just fair!
19:19 westbaystars: Woods fields the ball and throws to Yamai covering.
19:19 westbaystars: Kudoh dives into first - out.
19:20 westbaystars: Bang - bang play at first. Two down.
19:20 westbaystars: Inada lifts the first pitch to the left side.
19:20 westbaystars: Ibata hardly has to move, camps under the ball, and waits for it to come down.
19:21 westbaystars: That's three up, three down five innings in a row for the Fighters.
19:21 westbaystars: Can't score if you don't get anybody on base.
19:21 Firearm: Note to Dragons fans: please do not use the P-word
19:21 westbaystars: And after four and a half, the Dragons lead 1-0.
19:21 westbaystars: ---
19:21 westbaystars: Bottom of 5th
19:21 westbaystars: ---
19:21 Firearm: Westbay, there are always solo home runs But their biggest threat has already passed
19:22 Dave R: Has there ever been a no-no in the Nippon Series?
19:22 westbaystars: Kaneko hasn't passed yet.
19:22 Firearm: shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
19:22 Firearm:
19:23 westbaystars: Hirata leads off the Dragons' fifth.
19:23 Firearm: I doubt the Dragons mount a threat here.
19:23 Firearm: Hirata-Tanishige-Yamai due up
19:24 westbaystars: The next offering is lifted foul and out of play to the right side.
19:24 westbaystars: 1-1 pitch is grounded foul toward the cameraman's box on the third base side. Two strikes, 1 ball.
19:24 westbaystars: And he swings at the next pitch in the dirt.
19:24 Loudermilk: Its a no hit game for Chunichi so far?
19:25 westbaystars: That brings up Tanishige.
19:25 Firearm: shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
19:25 westbaystars: The P-word.
19:25 westbaystars: Darvish falls behind to Tanishige, a strike and 2 balls.
19:26 Firearm: yes, the p-word
19:29 Beethoven1: what's happening?
19:29 Firearm: Tanishige struck out, and Darvish just walked Yamai!
19:29 Beethoven1: He did?! Wow!
19:30 Firearm: yep
19:30 Firearm: Darvish just committed one of the cardinal sins of CL/NL baseball
19:30 Firearm: in almost all cases this comes back to bite you--probably not here
19:30 Beethoven1: I think westbaystars-san has had to leave for a bit. Can anyone take over to give us the action?
19:31 Firearm: 2 strikes 1 ball to Araki
19:31 Beethoven1: What cardinal sin?
19:31 Beethoven1: Thanks Firearm, much appreciated! :]
19:31 Firearm: walking/giving up a hit to the pitcher
19:32 Dave R: NHK World is back at the game now
19:32 Beethoven1: what's the count now?
19:32 Firearm: And Darvish gets Araki for strike three.
19:32 Firearm: After 5 innings, it's Chunichi 1, Nippon Ham 0.
19:32 Firearm: WB Westbay
19:33 westbaystars: Sorry, router's wireless card is having serious trouble.
19:33 Beethoven1: Heyas westbaystars! :]] wb
19:33 Firearm: Kaneko, Tsuruoka, and Darvish are due up for the Fighters in the 6th
19:33 Dave R: NHK just invoked the P-word (camera on a certain zero on the scoreboard)
19:33 westbaystars: Darvish walked Yamai on full count.
19:34 Beethoven1: I know the feeling! Firearm has been doing a good job. :]
19:34 Firearm: heh
19:34 westbaystars: Then Araki became strike out victim #8.
19:34 Firearm: you do realize, I did that whole thing looking at Yahoo scoreboard :P
19:34 westbaystars: ---
19:34 westbaystars: Top of 6th
19:34 westbaystars: ---
19:34 Beethoven1: Okay, so what IS the P word?
19:35 westbaystars: Good job. Thanks for carrying the group.
19:35 Firearm TO Beethoven1 - Perfect
19:35 Beethoven1: I got you to say it! LOL
19:35 Beethoven1: but thanks, I really didn't know.
19:35 westbaystars: Kaneko leads off the sixth quickly in the hole with two strikes.
19:36 westbaystars: Unable to hold up on a pitch in the dirt outside.
19:36 westbaystars: Third offering just misses low and away.
19:36 westbaystars: That was 55 pitches so far by Yamai.
19:36 westbaystars: Fourth offering is fouled off up the first base side.
19:36 Firearm: I think that's what the Fighters have to do
19:36 Firearm: work long counts on Yamai, make him tired in the later innings
19:36 westbaystars: Fifth offering misses inside, just missing Kaneko.
19:37 westbaystars: 2 and 2 the count.
19:37 Beethoven1: what?
19:37 westbaystars: And now it's full.
19:37 westbaystars: Shoubu pitch, and Kaneko can't hold up on the inside pitch, letter high.
19:37 westbaystars: Strike three.
19:37 Firearm: because who knows what got into Yamai, but it can't last forever
19:37 westbaystars: That's just #4 for Yamai, half of Darvish's.
19:38 Firearm: (but that's okay, it just has to last 9 innings )
19:38 westbaystars: Tsuruoka grounds to the right side. Easy out number two.
19:38 Firearm: heh, thanks for bailing out Yamai!
19:39 westbaystars: That brings up Darvish, for the second time in 6 innings. Batter number 18. You do that math.
19:39 westbaystars: Darvish swings and misses at the 1-1 offering, 2 strikes and a ball.
19:39 westbaystars: And the next offering strikes Darvish out.
19:40 westbaystars: Three up, three down for the 6th time this game.
19:40 Firearm: you better believe NHK is shamelessly using the P-word
19:40 westbaystars: After 5 and a half, the Dragons hold onto their precious 1-0 lead.
19:40 westbaystars: Bottom of 6th
19:40 westbaystars: ---
19:40 westbaystars: Bottom of 6th
19:40 westbaystars: ---
19:41 Loudermilk: Nagoya better win...its 640am here in Atlanta!
19:41 westbaystars: The Dragons will be sending up Ibata, Morino, and Woods in the sixth.
19:42 westbaystars: Almost time to leave for work?
19:42 westbaystars: Ibata fouls off the first pitch.
19:42 Loudermilk: Almost time to go to sleep!
19:42 westbaystars: Second offering swung on and missed, two quick strikes.
19:43 westbaystars: Takes ball one up high.
19:43 westbaystars: That was pitch number 76 for Darvish.
19:43 westbaystars: Darvish misses up high and in for ball two.
19:43 westbaystars: 2 and 2 the count.
19:43 Firearm: Darvish has had to work a lot more than Yamai, but Darvish will go until the end
19:43 westbaystars: The 2-2 offering is grounded right at Tanaka at second.
19:44 Loudermilk: Followed my Red Sox throught the whole season, and now my home away from home team gonna make it to the promised land!
19:44 Firearm: shhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
19:44 westbaystars: He's up with it and throws to first for out number one.
19:44 Firearm: Loudermilk, we're still in Red Sox pre-2004 mode!
19:44 westbaystars: Yamai has only thrown 65 pitches through 6 innings. About 11 pitches per innng.
19:45 Firearm: yep, while Darvish is closer to 15 pitches per inning
19:45 westbaystars: Second offering to Morino catches the inside corner for a called strike one. 1 and 1.
19:45 westbaystars: Third offering in the dirt, bounces off Tsuruoka's glove toward the first base dugout.
19:45 westbaystars: Fourth offering fouled off to the right side.
19:46 westbaystars: 2 and 2.
19:46 westbaystars: Next pitch misses inside. Full count.
19:46 westbaystars: Has Yamai gone 3 balls to any hitters tonight?
19:47 Firearm: yes, last inning
19:47 Firearm: Kaneko got to a full count with Yamai
19:47 westbaystars: The shoubu pitch misses inside in the dirt. Ball four.
19:47 westbaystars: That's the second walk by Darvish tonight.
19:47 Christopher: Is Darvish tiring?
19:47 Firearm: Darvish does not tire
19:47 Firearm: he can pitch at least 120-130
19:47 westbaystars: Ah, that's right. Thanks.
19:47 westbaystars: Woods stands in with a runner at first and one out in the bottom of the 6th.
19:48 westbaystars: He may be frustrating. Getting frustrated with his own pitches in the dirt.
19:48 westbaystars: Or maybe at the Dragons not always swinging at them.
19:48 Firearm: no, he's probably more frustrated that the Fighters' bats haven't done anything
19:49 westbaystars: A throw over to first with the count 2 strikes and a ball.
19:49 westbaystars: Morino back standing up. He really didn't have much of a led.
19:49 westbaystars: led --> lead.
19:49 westbaystars: The next pitch bounces in front of the plate.
19:50 westbaystars: Tsuruoka scrambles to keep the runner from advancing, and does so.
19:50 westbaystars: Hold him from advancing, that is.
19:50 westbaystars: 2 and 2 the count to Woods.
19:50 westbaystars: The 2-2 offering is swung on and missed. Strike out.
19:51 westbaystars: Two down, runner at first, Nori coming to the plate.
19:51 westbaystars: That was strike out #9, by the way.
19:51 westbaystars: Nakamura takes ball one low and away.
19:52 Firearm: The Dragons have to make the most of their chances--even with the way Yamai is pitching, this can still turn into a loss
19:52 Firearm: very easily
19:52 westbaystars: Second offering misses down low. Nori is showing patience.
19:52 abc: whats the score guys?
19:52 westbaystars: That was 91 pitches for Darvish.
19:52 westbaystars: Dragons 1 - 0 Fighters.
19:53 westbaystars: Third offering catches the outside corner at the shins. Called strike 1.
19:53 abc: thanks
19:53 abc: inning?
19:53 westbaystars: The next pitch is lined back at Darvish.
19:53 westbaystars: It hits Darvish on the back.
19:53 Firearm: ouch!
19:53 westbaystars: He picks the ball up, tosses underhand to Seguignol.
19:53 westbaystars: And the side is retired.
19:53 westbaystars: Darvish looks OK.
19:54 westbaystars: And after 6 complete, the Dragons continue to hold onto their precious 1-0 lead.
19:54 Loudermilk: Sounds like Darvish is having a great game himself
19:54 westbaystars: === Game Update
19:54 baekgom: Does anyone know which Japanese radio stations are covering the game?
19:54 Loudermilk: what are the starting pitchers reg season stats?
19:54 Christopher: Not quite his best but very near
19:54 abc: guys, can ask a question that sounds weird?
19:54 westbaystars: === Nori doubled to right-center, one bounder to the wall.
19:54 abc: whatever happened to Kosuke Fukudome?
19:55 Firearm: elbow
19:55 Loudermilk: he died is a JR rail accident
19:55 westbaystars: === After Lee struck out, Hirata hit a sacrifice fly deep to right.
19:55 westbaystars: Hirai vs. the Fighters has been 18 up, 18 down.
19:55 Firearm: elbow, had surgery in LA
19:55 westbaystars: ---
19:55 westbaystars: Top of 7th
19:55 westbaystars: ---
19:56 abc: ok thanks
19:56 Firearm: Yamai
19:56 Firearm: how dare you insult Yamai like that, Westbay
19:56 westbaystars: He grounds the ball to Ibata at short.
19:56 westbaystars: The throw to first is in time. One away.
19:56 Loudermilk: Amai?
19:56 Firearm: Fighterball doesn't work unless Hichori gets on!
19:56 the2belo: There we are.
19:56 westbaystars: Oh, Hirai --> Yamai. Gomen.
19:57 westbaystars: Tanaka takes the first pitch high and away. Ball one.
19:57 the2belo: In a little while I'm going to try to escape work and head for the Chunichi Building; they've got the game on there.
19:58 westbaystars: Count goes to 2 and 2 vs. Tanaka.
19:58 Firearm: stay where you are--if you change locations they might lose! :P
19:58 westbaystars: The fifth offering is lifted to left.
19:58 westbaystars: Morino goes back, and makes the over the shoulder catch for out number two.
19:58 westbaystars: Whew, that was close.
19:58 the2belo: At least I'm not using the P-WORD#{`$+%&{#`$+%6
19:59 the2belo: *applauds Dragonbutt*
19:59 westbaystars: Inaba is swinging at the first pitch, fouled off to the left side.
19:59 Loudermilk: you pooted?
19:59 westbaystars: Second offering grounded to the first base coach.
19:59 the2belo: They've been swinging early in the count a lot, haven't they?
19:59 westbaystars: Second offering catches the outside corner. 1 and 1.
19:59 Firearm: yeah, they seem too eager to get something going
20:00 westbaystars: Waste pitch way high and away, Inaba not going for it.
20:00 westbaystars: The next pitch is lifted to left center.
20:00 westbaystars: Morino going back and into the gap.
20:00 westbaystars: Makes the catch and tosses the ball into the stands.
20:00 the2belo: get over there....
20:00 the2belo: Wahahahahaha.
20:01 Firearm: I'm calling it right now
20:01 Firearm: SOMEONE's bunting for the Fighters
20:01 the2belo: I was just about to say
20:01 the2belo: They can't let this continue
20:01 westbaystars: Is one run enough to win it for the Dragons?
20:02 Firearm: I doubt it
20:02 westbaystars: They'll be trying to add some insurance in their Lucky Seven.
20:02 the2belo: I don't want to entertain that idea but I doubt it too
20:02 westbaystars: After six and a half, the Dragons lead 1-0.
20:02 westbaystars: ---
20:02 westbaystars: Bottom of 7th
20:02 Firearm: but if Yamai can get out #22, then maybe
20:02 westbaystars: ---
20:02 Christopher: Yes one run is enough to win.
20:03 westbaystars: As for the Fighters swinging early, it's because Yamai keeps getting two quick strikes on them.
20:03 westbaystars: If they know the first two pitches are going to be strikes, give it a try.
20:03 the2belo: Most of the fans in the stands are now likely turning bluer than their jerseys
20:03 the2belo: holding their breath.
20:03 Firearm: the next out is the most important out
20:03 Loudermilk: Like Rasputia says HOW U DOIN!
20:03 Firearm: for Yamai
20:04 westbaystars: Lee is quickly in the hole 2 strikes, no balls to lead off the bottom of the seventh.
20:04 Beethoven1: Hey Loudermilk! :]
20:04 the2belo: How many K's does Darv have now?
20:04 westbaystars: Third offering bounces beind the plate. Good block by Tsuruoka.
20:04 Firearm: Darvish will go the distance, win or lose
20:04 westbaystars: The next offering in the dirt outside is swung on and missed.
20:05 westbaystars: Darvish enters double digits with the Ks.
20:05 the2belo: askhflakjs
20:05 Loudermilk: hey
20:05 Firearm: Lee, you idiot. You're supposed to give Yamai more time to rest
20:05 the2belo: That answered my question. Crikey.
20:05 westbaystars: Hirata follows.
20:05 westbaystars: 1 for 6 so far in the Series.
20:05 westbaystars: Failing to check his swing, the count goes 1 and 1.
20:06 westbaystars: Takes ball two on Darvish's 100th pitch.
20:06 westbaystars: Fourth offering called strike two. 2 and 2.
20:06 Firearm: Darvish is good to go for the rest of the game
20:06 westbaystars: And Hirata looks foolish chasing one low and away with just one hand on the bat.
20:07 westbaystars: Strike out number 11.
20:07 the2belo: Yeah I don't see him coming out either
20:07 the2belo: Gah!
20:07 westbaystars: That brings up Tanishige, who takes the first pitch down the pipe.
20:07 westbaystars: Second offering just misses outside? High? Not sure. 1 and 1.
20:08 westbaystars: Third pitch low and away doesn't get Tanishige going. 1 strike, 2 balls.
20:08 the2belo: Yahoo has it marked outside.
20:08 westbaystars: Tanishige swings and misses the fourth offering over the outer part of the plate. 2 and 2.
20:08 westbaystars: And the next offering is drilled through the left side, base hit.
20:09 westbaystars: Two out runner for the Dragons, with the pitcher Yamai coming up.
20:09 westbaystars: Yamai has grounded out to second and walked so far tonight.
20:09 Beethoven1: what page on Yahoo, the2belo?
20:09 Firearm: yep, that base hit won't hurt the Fighters
20:09 the2belo: But it will likely make little difference...
20:09 westbaystars: One of just two starters who haven't gone down swinging yet.
20:09 Firearm: of course, Darvish DID walk Yamai last time
20:09 westbaystars: The other being Nori.
20:09 westbaystars: Yama lifts the ball deep to right.
20:09 the2belo: Beethoven: Yahoo Japan's live updated scoreboard:
20:09 westbaystars: Inaba goes back.
20:09 the2belo: http://baseball.yahoo.co.jp/npb/live?id=2007110101&rf=on
20:10 Beethoven1: THX!
20:10 westbaystars: And over to the line. Then takes a step in to make the catch for out number three.
20:10 the2belo: Aaaaaaaa
20:10 westbaystars: After 7 complete now, the Dragons continue to lead 1-0.
20:10 the2belo: When your own park works against you....
20:11 westbaystars: ---
20:11 westbaystars: Top of 8th
20:11 Firearm: I'm sure Yamai is completely alone in the dugout between innings
20:11 Firearm: this, coming up here, will be the most important
20:12 the2belo: make it or break it right here, folks
20:12 Firearm: this is the most important at-bat for either team, right here, leading off the 8th
20:12 Beethoven1: Nice graphics on that page, even though I don't read Japanese. Great the2belo! Thanks again! :]
20:12 westbaystars: ---
20:13 iPooted: what was Yamai's reg season win/losses
20:13 westbaystars: Seguignol leads off the eighth for the Fighters.
20:13 Firearm: Beethoven, click the button to the right so it auto refreshes
20:13 westbaystars: Swinging at the first pitch.
20:13 the2belo: Beethoven: It's a bit slow, but at least you have some visuals
20:13 westbaystars: And the Seguignol Shift pays off as Inaba, playing behind second, ...
20:13 Firearm: here comes Deanna
20:13 westbaystars: ... fields the ball to the right of second and throws to first for out number one.
20:13 the2belo: Yamai was 6-4 for the season
20:13 Beethoven1: Yeah, that's terrific! :]]
20:13 Firearm: or is that a bit at this point?
20:13 westbaystars: Did I say the wrong name again?
20:13 Firearm: yep
20:14 westbaystars: Argh! I did. Ibata, Ibata, Ibata!
20:14 the2belo: one complete game for the season
20:14 Firearm: at this point, I wonder if you're saying it intentionally to get a rise out of people
20:14 westbaystars: One pitch, one out.
20:14 westbaystars: And Kudoh is quickly in the hole 2 strikes, no balls.
20:14 westbaystars: The third offering *just* misses outside, Kudoh holding up.
20:14 the2belo: ERA 3.36
20:14 Beethoven1: Bad, very bad for the Fighters.
20:14 Firearm: not a great season, but a very solid season for Yamai
20:14 westbaystars: 80th pitch of the night for Yamai misses high and away, ball two.
20:15 westbaystars: 2 and 2.
20:15 westbaystars: The next offering in the dirt, swung on and missed strike three.
20:15 the2belo: None of it warranting a P-WORD, anyway
20:15 Firearm: *Has Ride of the Valkyries playing in the background*
20:15 the2belo: And Yamai passes the most important test,
20:15 westbaystars: That's a new Nippon Series record for long longest to go with the P-word.
20:15 westbaystars: Two outs into the 8th.
20:15 the2belo: and I think I'm going to shut up because holy crap dudes
20:16 westbaystars: And that brings up Inada.
20:16 westbaystars: Strike one down the middle, Inada looking like he was trying to duck out of the strike zone.
20:16 Firearm: the2belo, I've got Ride of the Valkyries playing now
20:16 the2belo: INABA{"#`+%"{`#$+[5@;
20:16 westbaystars: And he swings and misses the next pitch inside.
20:16 Firearm: it worked for Scott Erickson
20:16 westbaystars: Strike two.
20:16 Firearm: no, Inada
20:16 the2belo: heh
20:16 Firearm: Westbay's right this time
20:16 the2belo: I know
20:16 westbaystars: Except it isn7t Inada. It's Tsuboi.
20:16 the2belo: I'm being a dork
20:16 Firearm: heh
20:17 westbaystars: So I was wrong, just not that way.
20:17 the2belo: What, a PH?
20:17 Firearm: yep, PH
20:17 the2belo: Firearm: Oh, yeah, Scott Erickson
20:17 the2belo: *nostalgia attack*
20:17 westbaystars: Fourth offering lifted to center.
20:17 westbaystars: Hirata comes over toward left.
20:17 westbaystars: Makes the catch for out number three.
20:17 westbaystars: And the side is retired.
20:17 Christopher: Its OK now to start thinking Scottish game
20:17 Firearm: LOL, just as the final note of Ride of the Valkyries plays
20:17 the2belo: oh my god
20:18 westbaystars: Can anyone say, Wow! to Yamai's performance?
20:18 the2belo: Wow? How about HOLY #$%{&`ING #${%`&+
20:18 Beethoven1: Wow! I wasn't expecting such impressive Dragon pitching!
20:18 Firearm: yeah, that does deserve a "HOLY ****" chant
20:18 iPooted: Holy Shit!
20:18 the2belo: dude this is *historic* Dragon pitching
20:19 jesse: Has there been a walk yet???
20:19 Firearm: I think the Dragons need to make this one a laugher in the 8th
20:19 the2belo: Even Yamamoto walked a guy
20:19 Firearm: NONE
20:19 jesse: holy
20:19 Firearm: no, Yamamoto didn't give up a walk on his no-no
20:19 the2belo: jesse: NO
20:19 iPooted: Will be so proud! I havent followed Japanese baseball since I left Japan
20:19 westbaystars: I wasn't expecting much in the way of Fighter batting, but this is beyond anything I expected.
20:19 Firearm: the P-word was broken up by a Morino error
20:19 westbaystars: ---
20:19 jesse: wow
20:19 westbaystars: Bottom of 8th
20:19 westbaystars: ---
20:19 Christopher: No walks by Yamai
20:19 the2belo: oh, right
20:19 jesse: i went to Games 3 & 4...too bad i couldn't find a ticket to this one
20:19 Firearm: And Yamai has a P-word through 8
20:20 jesse: sandy koufax-esque!!
20:20 the2belo: INSURANCE RUNS PLZ
20:20 the2belo: FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD
20:20 westbaystars: Darvish is gone.
20:20 westbaystars: H. Takeda is in.
20:20 Firearm: pinch hitter in the 9-slot
20:20 the2belo: they took him out?!
20:20 the2belo: oh
20:20 the2belo: okay
20:20 iPooted: Jesse youre from Nagoya?
20:20 westbaystars: Darvish ended at 11 strike outs this evening. Giving up just that one run in the second inning.
20:20 Firearm: lessee, what's Nippon Ham's order going to be for the 9th?
20:21 westbaystars: 5 hits overall, walking 2.
20:21 the2belo: Now that was a desperate move I think
20:21 westbaystars: Araki leads off for the Dragons.
20:21 Firearm: I'm guessing Yukio, Shinji Takahashi... ?
20:21 westbaystars: Takeda comes in for strike one on his first pitch of the game.
20:21 westbaystars: Next offering misses outside. 1 and 1.
20:21 Christopher: Desperate times need desperate measures
20:21 Firearm: Kawashima?
20:22 jesse: no i am from New York City actually...but was in Nagoya last night. Am currently in Kyoto
20:22 westbaystars: Next pitch is over the outside part of the plate at the knees. Strike two.
20:22 Firearm: in no particular order, yeah-- Yukio, Shinji, Kawashima
20:22 iPooted: Has there been a no no in the Japan series?
20:22 westbaystars: Fourth pitch is grounded back to Takeda on the mound.
20:22 Firearm: shhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
20:22 westbaystars: He fields the ball, throws to first for out number one.
20:22 iPooted: oh nice- Im originally from Nissin cho
20:22 Dave R: Have there been any errors by anybody during the series?
20:22 Beethoven1: Lucky guy, Jesse! :]
20:22 jesse: i was in nagoya this morning, but couldnt find a ticket for less than 40,000....game 3 cost me 9800 and game 4 8000
20:22 Firearm: Dave, the Fighters made an error in Game 4
20:22 jesse: steep but insane!
20:22 Firearm: scored a run
20:23 westbaystars: First pitch to Ibata in there for a called strike one.
20:23 westbaystars: Second offering misses outside. 1 and 1.
20:23 Firearm: I'd say out of the pinch hitters that Nippon Ham can bring in, Shinji's the most dangerous
20:23 Christopher: Not too expensive
20:23 Firearm: I saw him hit a 2-run homer in Sapporo Dome
20:23 westbaystars: Third pitch is fouled off to the right side. 2 strikes and a ball.
20:23 iPooted: hey that price is cheaper than a Red Sox game
20:24 jesse: well worth the experience!
20:24 westbaystars: Next pitch is lined to right.
20:24 Beethoven1: I'm sure it was, jesse. :]
20:24 westbaystars: But Inaba comes in to make the catch belt high.
20:24 westbaystars: Two down in the bottom of the 8th.
20:24 the2belo: Okay I think I can say that this is one of the most... odd Japan Series games I've ever witnessed.
20:24 jesse: a world series game in Yankee Stadium or Fenway would cost at least $400 to sit in the worst seats in the house!
20:25 westbaystars: Takeda throws strike one to Morino down the middle.
20:25 iPooted: When I left Japan, Ochiai was still playing for Nagoya LOL
20:25 westbaystars: Strike two.
20:25 westbaystars: Third offering, where did that miss?
20:25 Firearm: it's almost time to fire up Ride of the Valkyries again
20:26 jesse: it looked a little high, but i dunno...
20:26 the2belo: yes
20:26 westbaystars: Morino holds up accoring to the third base umpire. 2 and 2 the count.
20:26 the2belo: cue the CD, dude
20:26 westbaystars: Two down.
20:26 iPooted: So what happened to the Yankees? LOL
20:26 Firearm: high/outside, according to Yahoo
20:26 westbaystars: The 2-2 offering is grounded up the third base side, foul.
20:26 Firearm: not until the top of the inning
20:27 Firearm: still, Shinji Takahashi is a home run threat sitting on the bench
20:27 westbaystars: 2-2 pitch again, grounded to Tanaka.
20:27 Firearm: he's no Shinnosuke Abe in terms of hitting homers, but he can
20:27 jesse: The Yankees...Now that A-Rod is gone, I think it's for the best! Baseball is a team sport; he is a one-man show
20:27 westbaystars: Tanaka throws to first in time, and the Dragons are down in order.
20:27 the2belo: okay, I've decided, I'm not going anywhere
20:27 westbaystars: Ochiai-kantoku comes out of the dugout.
20:27 westbaystars: There are going to be some changes.
20:27 Christopher: Difficult choice now but it looks like Iwase
20:27 the2belo: And... CUE MUSIC
20:27 jesse: but let's keep this to the Dragons...
20:27 Firearm: Hidenori
20:27 westbaystars: Mori-coach is coming out with the ball.
20:28 Firearm: Watanabe?
20:28 the2belo: <-- shoots a look at Firearm
20:28 westbaystars: Iwase!
20:28 Firearm: the Dragons will probably bring in all their defensive subs
20:28 westbaystars: Iwase will be taking over for P-Yamai.
20:28 jesse: Wait? Did they change pitchers?!?
20:28 iPooted: Thats BS to take him out
20:28 the2belo: Perhaps a combined P-word?
20:28 Firearm: complete BS
20:28 Firearm: and Iwase has been human this year
20:28 jesse: Wasn't he pitching a p***** game?
20:29 Firearm: yes
20:29 abc: dragons are so close!
20:29 jesse: that is terrible
20:29 westbaystars: Yamai threw 86 pitches over 8 innings, allowed no runs on no hits, there were no errors, and he didn't walk anybody.
20:29 Christopher: 1-0 you go to your star closer
20:29 the2belo: I figure Ochiai is taking NO chances and the purpose is to win the game
20:29 Beethoven1: Yes, they are!
20:29 westbaystars: Faced the minimu 24 batters.
20:29 jesse: and only 86 pitches??
20:29 Firearm: Christopher, Iwase has blown about 4-5 saves this year

20:29 westbaystars: ---
20:29 westbaystars: Top of 9th
20:29 westbaystars: ---
20:29 Firearm: hardly an Iwase season for Iwase
20:29 the2belo: and Iwase has not given up a hit in 11 Series appearances
20:29 iPooted: 86 pitches?! This is a joke WTF
20:30 Firearm: will Kaneko go?
20:30 Firearm: STOP THAT THE2BELO
20:30 jesse: I disagree with that decision.
20:30 Firearm: "Gary Anderson has not missed a field goal this season"
20:30 Christopher: Maybe but with 43 saves and no hits in the series a good bet
20:30 the2belo: OKAY I WILL SHUT UP
20:30 abc: you played to win the Series, not to get a individual accomplishments
20:30 iPooted: Ochiai needs to be slapped even if they win
20:31 westbaystars: Kaneko leads off the 9th for the Fighters.
20:31 Firearm: I don't think he'll care if they win
20:31 westbaystars: Iwase's first pitch misses low and inside. Ball one.
20:31 jesse: Of course it's not about the individual, but when a pitcher absolutely shuts down an offence for 8 innings, you send him
20:31 jesse: especially with a low pitch count
20:31 westbaystars: Second offering is fouled off to the left side.
20:31 Firearm: and the bottom of the order
20:31 jesse: If you were on the Dragons, wouldn't you want to face a new pitcher???
20:31 jesse: I mean FIGHTERS
20:32 westbaystars: Defensively, the Dragons look the same.
20:32 westbaystars: Nori at third, Woods at first.
20:32 westbaystars: Swing and a miss. Strike two.
20:32 Firearm: Westbay, I assume that's a just-in-case thing
20:32 iPooted: He was dominating..DOMINATING the game
20:32 westbaystars: Iwase has a slower pace than Yamai.
20:32 jesse: exactly!
20:32 westbaystars: Next offering, swung on and missed, strike three.
20:32 Firearm: 1 DOWN!!!
20:32 Firearm: oops, I forgot to hit Ride of the Valkyries
20:33 the2belo: You would want to face a new pitcher but you would not want that pitcher to be Iwase.
20:33 the2belo: CUE MUSIC
20:33 the2belo: ATO FUTARI
20:33 iPooted: Ochiai sounds like he still wants to be known for his unorthadox style
20:33 the2belo: ATO FUTARI
20:33 Christopher: Yes but the ninth is different
20:33 westbaystars: Tsuruoka stands in.
20:33 Firearm: Tsuruoka?
20:33 westbaystars: Swings and lines the first offering up the right side - foul.
20:33 Firearm: why aren't they going to Shinji Takahashi?
20:34 jesse: I guess if they get the two more outs, it doesn't really matter....
20:34 abc: wait, didnt Kawakami start tonight?
20:34 Firearm: Shinji IS in!
20:34 westbaystars: That doesn't look like Tsuruoka.
20:34 westbaystars: #30.
20:34 Firearm: it's Shinji Takahashi
20:34 Firearm: the more offensively dangerous catcher for the Fighters
20:34 westbaystars: 1 strike, 2 balls the count.
20:35 jesse: that was a long out
20:35 westbaystars: Pinch hitter Takahashi lifts the ball high and deep to left.
20:35 the2belo: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
20:35 westbaystars: And makes the catch for out number two.
20:35 Christopher: OK Dragons fans you may chant Ato Hitori
20:35 westbaystars: That looked like the right trajectory.
20:36 westbaystars: 後一人。Ato hitori. One more.
20:36 Firearm: man, Shinji
20:36 Firearm: who's batting?
20:36 Firearm: Yukio?
20:36 westbaystars: Koyano stands in as a pinch hitter.
20:36 Firearm: ah, Koyano
20:36 westbaystars: Actually, he came in earlier with a double switch last inning.
20:36 the2belo: <8C><88><90>l<81>I
20:36 westbaystars: Two balls to Koyano.
20:36 iPooted: mo soro soro owari da ne
20:36 the2belo: And I have encoding problems!
20:37 westbaystars: Third offering comes over, strike one.
20:37 the2belo: namumyouhorengekyo
20:37 westbaystars: String two swinging at a high pitch.
20:37 westbaystars: 2 and 2.
20:37 Christopher: Ato ikyu
20:37 the2belo: ATO IKKYU!
20:37 Firearm: ONE TO GO!!!
20:37 Firearm: ONE PITCH TO ERASE ALL THE DEMONS OF THE DRAGONS FRANCHISE!!!
20:37 the2belo: COME ON
20:37 westbaystars: 後一球。Ato ikkyu. One more pitch.
20:38 the2belo: 53 YEARS IN THE MAKING!
20:38 the2belo: COULD IT BE?
20:38 westbaystars: The voltage is rising at Nagoya Dome.
20:38 westbaystars: 2 and 2, 2 down.
20:38 the2belo: DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?
20:38 jesse: congrats!
20:38 westbaystars: The next pitch is grounded toward the second base bag.
20:38 Firearm: 53 YEARS OF TRYING! 53 YEARS OF FRUSTRATION!
20:38 iPooted: FUCK YESSSSSS!
20:38 Christopher: Congratulations to the Dragons
20:38 westbaystars: Throws high to first.
20:38 westbaystars: Araki fields the ball.
20:38 Firearm: THE DRAGONS ARE YOUR NIPPON SERIES CHAMPIONS!!!
20:38 abc: YES
20:38 jesse: 53 years since their last one?
20:38 the2belo: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
20:38 jesse: a perfect game
20:38 westbaystars: Woods pulls the ball down, and the Dragons win!
20:38 the2belo: AJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAAJAJAJJA
20:38 jesse: SICK
20:38 the2belo: #{`R+&{&`R+#{$&`+$Y{%`&+{$`&+
20:39 Firearm: PERFECT GAME!!!!
20:39 westbaystars: That was an incredible game.
20:39 westbaystars: Combined perfect game for Yamai and Iwase.
20:39 the2belo: HOLY FUCKING SHIT DUDE
20:39 westbaystars: The Dragons winning it 1-0 on a sacrifice fly.
20:39 Firearm: and now the music shifts to--Going the Distance
20:39 Beethoven1: WOW! OUTSTANING!!!!!!!!!! :]]]]
20:39 iPooted: I dont believe in Jesus Christ, but JESUS CHRIST!
20:39 jesse: that as a REALLY quick game...gets that what happens when there 27 up and 27 down
20:39 Firearm: yep
20:40 Beethoven1: Congratulations westbaystars-san for calling the Series 5-1 for Chunichi.
20:40 the2belo: AHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAA
20:40 the2belo: AAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
20:40 timmcl: looks like I should have got up earlier, WOW
20:40 Beethoven1: and for doing such a great job describing the game! :]]
20:40 timmcl: nice call Michael
20:40 westbaystars: The team jumps up and down.
20:40 Firearm: bonus points if you can guess where I got that "53 years of trying/53 years of frustration" line from
20:40 Firearm: (hint: the actual line was "20 years of trying, 20 years of frustration")
20:41 the2belo: Thanks a lot for the coverage! Some of us are right next door yet have no TV (I'm at work)
20:41 Beethoven1: And so they should! LOL! A great win for the Dragons here! :]]
20:41 the2belo: Hey, Fighters! That's *our* title. We'll be needing it back.
20:41 abc: thanks to westbaystars
20:41 Christopher: Thanks for the coverage Michael
20:41 Beethoven1: +1 to that! :]]
20:41 the2belo: Don't stop now, describe the scene!
20:42 the2belo: DOAGE
20:42 westbaystars: My pleasure. I'm glad I got to watch the whole thing.
20:42 Firearm: the2belo, you forgot the "Come this Sunday"
20:42 westbaystars: Type misses and all.
20:42 Firearm: but then again, it really doesn't apply here--this ain't a puroresu PPV
20:42 the2belo: I have to admit that Ochiai pulled off a BIG gamble just now.
20:42 Beethoven1: This was quite the series, guys. Very exciting!
20:43 timmcl: just curious, but how many pitches thrown through 8?
20:43 Firearm: we beat Darvish--I think that's the most significant part
20:43 Firearm: 86
20:43 Christopher: Just saw Fukudome on the screen - in uniform
20:43 Beethoven1: I have to go. Thanks for the good company guys!!! :]]
20:43 the2belo: The Dragons web site is *down* hahahahaha
20:43 Beethoven1: Bye. :
20:43 the2belo: overloaded
20:43 Firearm: Fukudome--I love you man, but you've just been Ewing Theory'd
20:43 timmcl: and replaced with Iwase for 9'th
20:43 westbaystars: Hillman-kantoku and crew just watch stunned from the third base dugout.
20:44 westbaystars: Woods is greeting people through the netting.
20:44 Beethoven1: That I have. LOL
20:44 Beethoven1: bye
20:44 Firearm: Westbay, you read the Ewing Theory article, didn't you?
20:44 westbaystars: Hey, everything I typed didn't go through.
20:44 Firearm: wouldn't you say that applies to Kosuke?
20:44 westbaystars: Yes, I read that. Interesting.
20:44 westbaystars: Kantoku interview.
20:45 Firearm: he's probably crying
20:45 westbaystars: Mrs. Ochiai screaming to her husband and team.
20:45 Firearm: I would be too
20:45 Christopher: Good night to all
20:45 westbaystars: from above the first base dugout.
20:45 westbaystars: No tears from Ochiai-kantoku this time.
20:45 westbaystars: He's in full control. So far.
20:46 the2belo: I would be bawling my eyes out.
20:46 westbaystars: Of the 53 years, the 4 years Ochiai-kantoku has been in charge have been very long.
20:46 westbaystars: Many of the players were as they celebrated, bowed to the fans, etc.
20:47 westbaystars: The Fighters just had a look of shock in the third base dugout.
20:47 westbaystars: They're just watching now.
20:47 westbaystars: Ochiai-kantoku couldn't believe that Yamai had it in him to do what he did.
20:48 westbaystars: He believed in him and ball, but to do that. (Can we say the P-word yet?)
20:48 the2belo: WELL THEN WHY DID YOU PULL HIM
20:48 timmcl: Has a perfect game ever been thrown in the Series?
20:48 the2belo: PERFECT
20:48 the2belo: NO
20:48 the2belo: It's only ever been carried into the 8th I think
20:48 westbaystars: "We had to go through the Climax Series to get here."
20:49 the2belo: SHINJIRARENAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAI.
20:49 westbaystars: "Thank you fans for coming out and cheering us to finish it all here."
20:49 abc: i think it was the right decision to pull Yamai
20:49 westbaystars: I'm not a very good translator.
20:49 abc: you play to win the Series, and the lead was only 1 run.
20:49 the2belo: Do you guys realize that the Dragons only lost ONE GAME in the entire postseason?
20:50 westbaystars: And Ochiai-kantoku isn't nearly the showman as Hillman-kantoku.
20:50 westbaystars: Nakamura Norihiro gets the Nippon Series MVP.
20:50 steve: Who got the series MVP?
20:50 the2belo: Ochiai is one of the most low-key managers ever.

20:50 steve: Dang...too slow!
20:51 the2belo: Man the subway going home is going to be a CLUSTERFORNK.

Westbay-san, thanks for all the play by play! It has been great all year.

One question, since I missed the live chat, why after only throwing 86 pitches, did they pull Yamai while throwing a perfect game?

Thanks again.

This is a question best answered in this thread.

The neat part about having my two favorite teams face each other in the Japan Series is that even when one loses, the other one wins, so I'm still pretty happy for them. It's like, OK, Fighters got their 44-year pennant last year, so Chunichi got their 53-year pennant this year, and everyone's happy!

And, I did say Yamai is better than you give him credit for, didn't I? But d@mn, a perfect game. That's so awesome.

Oddly I only actually saw 15 minutes of this game, and it was the part when the Dragons scored their one run. I remember thinking, "Why do I have this feeling that the game's going to end at 1-0 and that's it for the Series?"

In reality, I think the Dragons just like winning games when it means I won't get to see them play. That's twice now d@mmit! Still, I doubt they can avoid being in the finals of the Konami Cup, so, d@mmit, my Morino #31 jersey is going to at least one more game this year.

I especially love seeing Nori as the MVP. He's just one of the best stories of this year, period.

Congrats to the Dragons! Finally, one of my teams brings home the trophy. Now if the Cubs can just do it for me once before I die.

I can't believe it was over 50 years since the last time Chunichi won it all. They always seem to be in contention.

I don't think they would've had all this recent success if it weren't for the acquisition of Tyrone Woods. With Fukudome being injured a lot of this year, his performance was crucial.

They have a ton of great pitchers and have been one of the best defensive teams in recent memory, but Woods is that big power bat that Nippon Ham just didn't have this year.

Wow! This is just the best day of my life, pretty much. Got home at 1pm, that was some celebration! What a great way to end 5 years of living in Japan and attending Dragons games. Amazing!

Despite being at the game last night, I just read the entire chat room log. I would have left Yamai in, but Ochiai's decision was correct because we won! End of story. It was mentioned in the chat that Kawakami could have relieved last night. That would not have been possible as he wasn't on the bench, no starters were - (Okamoto, Iwase, Suzuki, Ishii, Hirai, Hisamoto, Takahashi, and Cruz).

Great end to a great season, I'll be back soon. Take care!
