Hiroshima Signs Dominican Infielder

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Hiroshima Signs Dominican Infielder
According to Nikkan Sports, Hiroshima has signed Dominican infielder Esterlin Franco to a 1 year contract, worth 5.3 million yen. Franco came out of Hiroshima's Dominican Baseball Academy, and will wear uniform number 96. He entered the academy in 2002, and moved to China to play baseball for the Guangdong Leopards in 2004, where he took the HR and RBI titles. He has participated in Spring Training with Hiroshima since the beginning of February. (Source: Nikkan Sports, Japanese only)

You can see Esterlin's picture and more info in Japanese about him on this page from the Hiroshima Carp official Homepage. (Japanese only) For those of you that can't read Japanese, Esterlin is 25 years old, and his favorite player is Miguel Tejada of the Baltimore Orioles.

(Can anyone confirm that the name of the team he played for in China is correct? I did a little searching on the net and Canton is supposedly now known as Guangdong?)

Canton = Guangdong

Canton is apparently some English name for Guangdong just like Hong Kong is an English name for Xianggang.
