I would really like to know who has the most career homeruns in Japanese baseball history?

Sadaharu Oh (currently the manager for the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks) is the home run king of the world with 868 career home runs.


On top of that, he holds the most home runs in a season in Japan with 55 and hit the most grand slam home runs in a career in Japan with 15.  (I don't know how much longer that last record will stand.)


The top 10 in career home runs are:



  1. 868 (10.7) Oh Sadaharu (Giants)

  2. 657 (15.9) Nomura Katsuya (Seibu)

  3. 567 (15.6) Kadota Hiromitsu (Daiei)

  4. 536 (15.0) Yamamoto Kohji (Hiroshima)

  5. 510 (15.0) Ochiai Hiromitsu (Nippon Ham)

  6. 504 (19.2) Harimoto Isao (Lotte)

    7. 504 (18.7) Kinugasa Sachio (Hiroshima)
    486 (16.0) Ohsugi Katsuo (Yakult)
  7. 474 (12.4) Tabata Kohichi (Seibu)

  8. 456 (18.7) Doi Masahiro (Seibu)

Numbers in Parens

The numbers above in parentheses denote the average number of at bats per home run.  Harimoto and Kinugasa reached 500 thanks to playing for so long, but Oh hit one out almost once every 10 at bats.  Given that others of his same generation didn't hit balls out at the same rate, it goes to show just how far above the mean he was.
