ローテ入りが確実なオリックス岸田が、コリンズ監督を安心させた。初先発の２月２４日阪神戦（高知市営）は３回６安打４失点と打ち込まれたが、この日は巨人打線を５回６安打２失点に抑えた。高橋由も連続三振に仕留めるなど５三振を奪い、指揮官も「（２失点した）５回の失投以外は良かった。当然先発だ」と笑顔を見せた。ただし岸田自身は、５回２死から亀井と隠善に浴びた連続適時打が気に入らない様子。「走者を背負ってからもっと集中していかないと」と勝負所の制球を課題に挙げた。
