New Site Up

Discussion in the Administrative forum
New Site Up
As you regulars should be able to tell, I've converted over to a completly new forum software system. The previous one was written in Perl, a languages that I can't say that I know very well. "Jive" is written in Java, which I am very familiar with. (I'm a Java/Database programmer by day.)

I have to admit, that I'm new to this particular software, so it may take a while to get everything refined to where I want it. The first order of business, of course, will be to convert all of the old articles and comments to the new database format. My goal for that will be next weekend. Look and feel can be gradually tuned after that.

Try it out. If you have problems or questions about the how the new site works, post a reply under here and I'll see what can be done.

Please note: Since many of you may have forgotten your passwords, I decided not to copy the old user database over. Please feel free to sign up again (not required, but many features work better - like showing what comments you haven't read yet - only work if you are logged in).

The site looks fine overall, but what I miss is the front page with little boxes and pointers to stories etc. I'm sure the software is easier to manage, but
just having a list of subject areas seems, well, a little boring. But don't take my comments the wrong way. I'm sure this is something on your "to do" list.

I don't take it the wrong way at all. Those are just the kind of comments I wanted to hear!

I was afraid that the previous system was too cluttered, and unless you've got a high resolution screen, too narrow. Also, the system was geared more toward techies, and since I got so little feedback, I thought that it might have been a little too overwhelming for most readers. This seemed like a much more simple design for users.

As far as administration goes, I actually thought the other one was easier for many things, and had a lot of goodies built in like automatically mailing out notifications of updates and such. However, the main reason I like this system better from an administrator's standpoint is that it's in Java, which I know a great deal better than Perl, so it's easier for me to customize.

With that said, yes, I do plan on doing a make over after the end of the season. And I think I would like to bring back a lot of that old look, such as the boxes on the side. (But this time, just one side so that the lead in to stories isn't squeezed too small in the middle.)

Another thing I plan to do is have the top headlines on the top page (right now the top page redirects you here). Also from the top will be the return of my Player Meikan (registry) and, time permitting, other useful information that is a little more static than the forum.

Well, that's a list of what I want to do with the site. I'm always open to feedback as to what you all would like out of it.
About

This is a site about Pro Yakyu (Japanese Baseball), not about who the next player to go over to MLB is. It's a community of Pro Yakyu fans who have come together to share their knowledge and opinions with the world. It's a place to follow teams and individuals playing baseball in Japan (and Asia), and to learn about Japanese (and Asian) culture through baseball.

It is my sincere hope that once you learn a bit about what we're about here that you will join the community of contributors.
