Matsuzaka Outduels Sabathia; Okajima Helps
Former Seibu Lions superstar Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched 7 scoreless innings giving up 5 hits, walking 3, and striking out 5 to notch his 12th win of the season last night against the Cleveland Indians. Matsuzaka had his lightest workload of the season, only throwing 98 pitches before giving way to fellow countryman and Nippon Ham Fighters reliever Hideki Okajima and closer Jonathan Papelbon for the hard-fought 1-0 win.

The only rough spot of Matsuzaka's outing was the 1st inning, when Matsuzaka gave up a leadoff single to Indians CF Grady Sizemore, then followed it with a walk and a hit batsman. Matsuzaka snuffed out the threat by striking out Jhonny Peralta. From there, it was smooth sailing for Dice-K, who out-dueled CC Sabathia, Cleveland's ace.

This outing was a complete turnaround from Dice-K's first outing against Cleveland in June, when he was knocked around for a season-high 12 hits and took the loss. Matsuzaka, who only has one no-decision on the season, improves his record to 12-7, and trails teammate Josh Beckett for the league lead in wins.

Matsuzaka's next start will be against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on July 29th at Tropicana Field.
