After struggling mightily for Yomiuri, Bowker hit well for Yomiuri's minor league team in the Eastern League, posting an .816 OPS in 43 games. That was better than any qualifier except Yusuke Kosai (.881 OPS), a veteran minor leaguer who's a couple of months older than Bowker.

Given that Bowker will be 30 next July 8th, returning to NPB in 2013 probably offers him the best opportunity for maximizing his future income as a professional baseball player.

My educated guess is that the best contract Bowker could get returning to the U.S. is a minor league contract promising him $80,000 to $100,000 for his time in the minors and $600,000 to $700,000 for his time on a major league roster. If my estimation is accurate, Bowker would probably be better served returning to Japan in 2013 if Yomiuri will give him a contract for anywhere between $125,000 and $200,000, since the likelihood of Bowker receiving anything more than a September call-up in MLB in the future is pretty slim.

Reported today that Yomiuri resigned John Bowker for 2013 for 30 million yen. [Link - Yakyu Baka]
