Hanshin Disposes of Players
Just announced today, Shane Spencer has been told he will not be asked back next season. The same message has been delivered to Chris Oxspring and Darwin Cubilan.

Spencer is no surprise. Haven't seen Oxspring pitch in ages. Darwin had good stretches, but also makes me nervous. Even more so now that he just gave up a tying home run as I write this.

Any thoughts on Spencer's next move? Perhaps he would get a shot in the PL as a DH? His MLB days seem over.

Last time I saw Oxspring, the Kyojin rocked him.

And yeah, I was going to say about Darwin, that homer to Riggs (didn't matter though, the Tigers still won), but I can see why those guys are getting dumped.

As much as I think Okada-kantoku didn't use these (or for that matter, any other) pitchers very well, I am not sad to see Oxspring and Cubillan pack their bags. I'm not sure Spencer really ever got his due with the Tigers, however.

I guess this is a sign of the end of a disappointing season. I love miracles but I don't see one on the horizon. Time to start hoping for better things in 2007.

Why now? Why announce this now, when the Tigers still have a shot at winning the league? Is it to scare the remaining players into busting their butts to win? (I don't think it can work - most players know they're rarely safe and that the foreigners never are, so this is just confirming what they already know.)

All the Tigers have done recently, except for the Dragons series, is win and keep pressure on the leaders. Why mess with the mood like this? It seems like a great way to spoil the "let's pull together as a team and knock off those Dragons" vibe they've held on to so well so far.

I believe it has to do with contract negotiations. I've heard reference to many of the foreign players having clauses in their contracts that the next year must be renewed before October 1. I see this as Hanshin telling them that their agents don't need to bother with a trip to Japan this month. It's a courtesy.

Yes, it all depends on how the "announcement" was made. I mean, did the Tigers hold a press conference, or did the information leak? Was it speculation by a sports shimbun which was subsequently confirmed tacitly? Christopher didn't cite his source so it's hard to tell.

Source was Yahoo Japan. They are normally reliable.

Sure, but what were circumstances of the announcement? Did Yahoo say? A link to the story would help.

Right now, I'm not saying how the information got out, but I've heard of it for quite a while now, as Garland-san over at Japan Baseball Daily has also quoted Sankei Sports as saying Spencer is most likely to be gone after this year.

Anyway, here is a report [Sankei Sports - In Japanese], talking about Spencer.

Well that article doesn't shed much light on the issue. It basically says that it's becoming clearer now that Spencer won't be coming back next season, but from my reading says nothing about an official announcement from the Tigers.

I understand that, though from what I've seen in the past, this isn't such a new attitude. Many teams have announced which foreign players wouldn't be back at the end of the season in the past.

As for an official announcement, there probably won't be one until the end of the season or after the season.

Right, I understand how it works, but I'm just intrigued to know the circumstances of the "announcement" that Christopher referred to. Was it indeed an announcement from the Tigers, a leak to the press, or merely speculation on the part of the Fourth Estate?

The article you cite seems to be speculative. Was the Yahoo article based on the same source?

I was quite surprised at the timing as well. I read the news, and then Darwin was in pitching that night. Darwin's numbers aren't that bad, but he's a bit too jittery on the mound and seems to lose concentration. I was there when he gave up a smash to Matsuzaka, so I'm sure that didn't help his confidence any.

I'd still like to see what Spencer could do in Japan as an everyday player. He could hit 30+ homers, but he also might bat under .250 in the process. If he hadn't had a freak injury before the season started, he might have gotten the nod over Hamanaka, like last year. We'll never know.

No loss is seeing Spencer go. Don't know why some on this thread think he can do better. He was a bust for the Yankees and he is a bust here for the Tigers. He strikes out far too often. .222 average? He is in Kiyohara land.
