Consecutive Games Played
With Hideki Matsui's recent signing by the Yankees, his consecutive games playing streak will come to an end at 1,250 games (August 22, 1993 to October 11, 2002). Who will now have the longest active consecutive games streak (K. Matsui??), how long is it, and when did it start? In addition, is there a source for long consecutive games playing streak in Japanese baseball history (for example: top 10, 15 or 20 streaks) along with the beginning (1st game played of streak) and ending dates (last game played of streak) listed?

With a quick Google search I came up with this page which lists all players with 600 or more consecutive games played. Hideki Matsui has since risen to #2 in the list, and Kazuo Matsui has moved up to #6.

My 2003 Baseball Record Book (Baseball Magazine Sha, ISBN4-583-03724-4) lists the top 20 with beginning and ending dates. Unfortunately, I can't pronounce all of the players' names, so I'd appriciate any help I can get.

  1. Sachio Kinugasa (Hiroshima) 2215 1970.10.19 - 1987.10.22
  2. Hideki Matsui (Giants) 1250 1993.08.22 - 02.10.11
  3. Tokuji Iida (Kokutetsu) 1246 1948.09.12 - 1958.05.24
  4. Katsumi Hirosawa (Giants) 1180 1986.10.12 - 1995.10.08
  5. Fumio Fujimura (Osaka) 1014 1946.08.30 - 1954.07.31
  6. Kazuo Matsui (Seibu) 1003 1995.07.22 - 2002.10.14
  7. Kazuhiko Ishimine (Hanshin) 894 1988.08.14 - 1995.07.12
  8. Katsuo Ohsugi (Yakult) 890 1968.09.21 - 1975.08.20
  9. Hideshi Miyake (Hanshin) 882 1956.04.11 - 1962.09.05
  10. Kohji Yamamoto (Hiroshima) 872 1976.10.22 - 1983.08.28
  11. Koji Akiyama (Seibu) 833 1985.04.06 - 1991.06.16
  12. Sadayuki Tokutate (Sankei) 821 1961.04.09 - 1967.04.10
  13. Shinichi Etoh (Chunichi) 809 1959.04.11 - 1965.04.16
  14. Ryuzoh Yamasaki (Hiroshima) 803 1983.10.16 - 1990.04.28
  15. Ichiro Suzuki (Orix) 763 1994.04.09 - 1999.08.24
  16. Norihiro Komada (Yokohama) 739 1993.10.21 - 1999.07.16
  17. Kazuo Horii (Nankai) 733 1950.04.19 - 1956.03.24
  18. Jyunichi Kashiwabara (Nippon Ham) 717 1979.08.14 - 1985.05.09
  19. Nobuyuki Hikichi (Taiyo) 708 1952.05.18 - 1957.08.29
  20. Takeshi Aikoh (Lotte) 694 1987.10.20 - 1993.06.06

The teams listed are those that the player was on for the final game of their streak, not the teams they finished with.

And, yes, Kazuo Matsui's streak is now the currently longest continuing streak. It is also the longest all time consecutive streak in the Pacific League.

When Kazuo Matsui signed on with the New York Mets for the 2004 season, his playing streak in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) ended after 1,143 games. What is the date of his last regular season game played in that streak (game 1,143)?

When Kazuo Matsui left to join the Mets, did Tomoaki Kanemoto replace him as the league's new Iron Man with the longest active playing streak? What date did Kanemoto's streak start and how many consecutive games has he played through the end of the 2004 season?

Thanks!

Regards,

Marty

For the top 20 consecutive games played records, see [here.

Yes, Kanemoto is the new active Iron Man.
