THE HOT CORNER: Obsession with records gets in way
"It's not about individual records, as long as the team wins." If you haven't heard that phrase or something like it, you haven't been listening, since the sentiment is a staple of Japan's ubiquitous postgame "hero interviews."

Yet because the media use so much ink and air time on individual records, the pursuit of numerical goals obscures the only number that really counts: the team's win total. Hanshin Tigers manager Akinobu Okada admitted as much on Tuesday, after he called on flame-throwing Kyuji Fujikawa.
