Phenom pitcher leads Hillman's Fighters to Game 1 victory
SAPPORO, Japan - Here in the Japan Series, the Nippon Ham Fighters beat the Chunichi Dragons 3-1 in Game 1 Saturday night. The key figure was Fighters’ pitcher Yu Darvish who was all kinds of dominant. He struck out 13 - tying the Japan Series record - and he allowed just four hits, and he was throwing 152 km/hour in the ninth inning (that’s just a few decimal points below 95 mph for those of you scoring at home).

Darvish is just 21 years old, and he’s a phenom. He’s tall, and he’s loaded with charisma (he and his fiancée are sort of the Brad and Jen of Japan) and some people here think he will be better than Boston’s World Series starter Daisuke Matsuzaka. He won’t be eligible to come to America for a few years (and he has said that he doesn’t have much interest in that right now), but you better believe new Kansas City manager Trey Hillman has told Royals owner David Glass and general manager Dayton Moore to start saving up.

Maybe we need to have another sales tax increase.
