Catchers should receive the ball with one hand when there aren’t any runners on base. With two strikes and no runners, the catcher should be prepared to block any pitches that are in the dirt or out of the strike zone. When runners are on base, the throwing hand must be in position slightly behind the glove with the fingers of the throwing hand relaxed and the thumb protected by the relaxed fingers. This is in case foul tips miss the glove and hit the hand - the relaxed folded fingers protecting the thumb will hurt but hopefully not break any parts of the throwing hand.
