Matsui Injured in New York; Streak Ends

Matsui Injured in New York; Streak Ends
Hideki Matsui fractured his left wrist while catching a short flyball by Loretta during the first inning of last night's game at Yankee Stadium. He is undergoing surgery as we speak at New York's Presbyterian Hospital. The prognosis is not very good: At least 3 months out of the lineup, and he may be out for the season. There is already talk of getting another left fielder to be competitive this season.

During post-game interviews, some of the players showed their sadness. Giambi said that Matsui was a very good friend and that this will bust the team. Damos stated that it will be difficult not to see Matsui to his left during the games, and Derek Jeter indicated that they were all shocked because you can always count on Matsui. Joe Torre looked very shocked as well.

Because he did not play at least for one half inning, Matsui's game streak officially ended last night. The Yankees have lost a 100-plus RBI man, and a leader on and off the field. Very sad news. I wish well to Hideki.
