8. Tips
--------

To get the most speed out of a base runner, repeatedly press L1, L2, R1, and R2.
This is crucial for stealing bases, getting infield hits, and sac flies.

Hold up with L2 and R2 in order to perform a slide to break up the double play.

After catching the third out with an outfielder, press square and triangle to
throw the ball into the leftfield stands. Press circle and triangle to throw
to the rightfield stands.

Press triangle right before catching a fly ball to perform the Shinjo hop.

On higher difficulty levels, it's crucial to mix up your pitches. Throw inside,
outside, high, and low. Mix up fastballs with breaking balls. Vary your first
pitches. Don't always go for strike outs early or late in counts. Everything
should be varied. You should also be aiming to get perfect release timing on every pitch
you throw. If you find yourself not being able to hit perfect release timing, use
the rosin bag when you have to. If you still have trouble, spend some time training
or play on lower difficulty.

Try to avoid swinging at pitches early in the count that aren't fat pitches. Japanese
pitchers pride themselves on their stamina, so you should try and get them to throw
as many pitches as possible.

I have the ps3 version and am enjoying it so much but with this even more

No problem. I forgot a couple more things.

Press the right analog stick up while pitching to use full power pitching in pinch situations. Press it down to use the rosin bag and get a better grip on the ball.

Also, with my custom settings, I highly advise turning off the strike zone at least while batting.

thx for the good tips =)

btw,,,i noticed that you put pitch speed to basic. so, from your extensive playtest, this is a better option in stead of middle or real to make the game more realistic?

btw,,,how do i use the full power pitch?
so, after i first press X, then i hold right analog stick up during the windup until i press X second time?

isnt that tough to do since you still have to maintain the cursor position with the left analog?

thx

I'm having some trouble though.

Some of these don't match the PS3 screens...

as far as say going line by line in something like the user settings these settings don't match up

Thanks BMZ. Last years guide was a godsend, I appreciate the work you put into your guides. They are an immense help. I was wondering if you were going to do a translation for the Arrange and Trade section? I spend a lot of my time before exhibition matches setting the lineups so they match the correct batting orders used in real life. Being able to have everything done and saved ahead of time would be tremendous. Thanks again.

Update on realistic settings. This is what I use now...

CPU Pitching: Spirits
CPU Batting: Hard+
CPU Running: Perfect
CPU Defense: Perfect
Control Type: Digital
Pitch Speed: Basic+
Batting Cursor: Normal
Pitching Cursor: Real

When you pitch, make sure you basically paint the lines of the strike zone. A millimeter can be the difference between giving up a hit or inducing a ground ball.

When batting, use power cursor until you reach strike two, then switch to contact. Only swing with power before two strikes when the pitch is a fat mistake pitch. Use power swing the entire at bat if a runner is on first to avoid the double play. Also use power the entire at bat if it's 2 outs no runners on. Use contact only if a runner is in scoring position with no runner on first. You can also use it if runners are in scoring position, there are 2 outs, and a runner is on first. Complicated? Well, it works.

The genius behind using Basic+ speed and Spirits CPU with digital control is that the best pitches can't be hit. Even with the most skilled players, the digital controls can only reach so far. If a CPU pitcher hits a corner with a perfect pitch, you won't be able to hit it. This makes for realistic strike out totals as well as intense at bats.

btw, bmz

do you have any tips or suggestion on how to use the X and O efficiently in batting?

i remember ive read somewhere saying that if the pitch is outside, use O and if inside, use X

Hey BIGZ or anyone else who can confirm this, for baserunning lets say I hit a deep fly to right field and I have runners on first and second. If I only wanted to advance my runner on 2nd I would hold SQUARE and press LEFT on my control pad? Just wondering thx.
Re: Translation Guide and Very Good Settings
[ Author: thenewcurse | Posted: Apr 7, 2007 4:44 AM ]

That's the idea. Use X when trying to pull the ball and O to slap at pitches you want to fight off foul, pitches that your late on, or pitches on the outer half of the plate. I would advise to simply use X unless your expecting a breaking ball, are in a two strike count, or you purposely want to hit the ball in a direction that will advance a base runner, i.e. with a right handed hitter up with a runner a first base.

thx for the info

but did you mean use O instead of X since O is to slap and X is to pull

Thanks for the guide it makes it easier for us that don't know Japanese.

I don't even know that much english, since I am Mexican,
and a proud supporter of the Aguilas de Mexicali (Mexican Pacific League team)

This game is great, the batting system reminds me of Acclaim's All-Star Baseball series for the Nintendo 64 (Not saying its dated, on the contrary it is very well executed).

Re: Translation Guide and Very Good Settings

hi

just curious....is there a big difference in terms of realism between pitch speed of basic+ and middle?

maybe i am wrong...isnt pitch speed referred to how fast the ball travel after it is released?

and regarding a perfect pitch cant be hit.....but in real game, a real pitch can still be hit.....just the hitter has to be in a zone or made a good predication on what is coming

Mod: How come I get a feeling that you keep asking these questions and have yet to actually purchase the game? Why don't you play the game and answer these questions for yourself? A lot of questions can be asked by someone before they make the decision to purchase a game, but you ask lots of questions that are just annoying and should be answered through playing the game for yourself. I won't be accepting anymore questions that I feel don't add to the discussion.

I'd also like to add that when you play Pennant, it's highly advised that you turn off trades. Trades don't happen often in Japan, and they're no name players 99% of the time. PYS4 trades big name players, and the game also doesn't automatically assign numbers. For example, the Lions traded Hideaki Wakui for Toshihisa Nishi, which is a terrible trade. Nishi wears #7 for the Baystars, so he shared #7 with Yasuyuki Kataoka. This was annoying me, since I wanted a realistic pennant, so I was forced to restart. Here is how you turn trades off.

Configuration is the second to very bottom option on the Pennant Main Menu. Choose that, then choose the very top option. That gives you Pennant Options. Trades are at the top of that. The options there are On, Only Trade With Me, and Off. Choose Off, which is the very bottom option.

do you have any good tips on using X and O for batting?

and

regarding contrl type. Is there any reason why you pick digital over analog?

analog mode seems easier and more responsive when contrling the cursor

Mod: This is what I'm talking about. You asked the same question in another post. I will NOT allow repeat questions and posts in the future. Make a note of that. As for X and O. I use X only when I bat for power. For contact, I use X on inside pitches and O on outside pitches.

Re: Translation Guide and Very Good Settings
[ Author: ken_hanshin | Posted: Apr 11, 2007 12:14 AM | HT Fan ]

is there any reason why you choose digital over analog?

btw, bmz, this is an open forum. if you dont like the qusetions, dont answer them, simple as that
no need to say, oh that question is worthy of my time, ok i will answer that. or that question is stupid, i dont want to answer it and i have to tell the poster that your question is stupid.

Mod: Reaction time is a lot slower using digital control pad. If the pitching is too fast, like Real Speed, it takes all the fun out of the game for me. It's also impossible to hit homers. I worked hard to find the best mix of realism and fun. I think for advanced players, my method of play is as good as it'll get. As for questions, I'll go ahead and approve questions I find to be foolish, but please don't complain when I don't answer. Since I am the moderator, I get yelled at by posters when I don't immediately answer questions a lot of the time. I just don't want a fun board being turned into a flood of questions and copy/paste answers.

After selecting what kind of match you want (1P vs com etc) in exibition mode, you will be then confronted with the setup screen.

Under the batting cursor options (yellow header), select the third option from the top (エリア) which is "Area" hitting which is maybe more like the zone hitting you were after.

Re: Translation Guide and Very Good Settings
[ Author: Paakaa10 | Posted: Apr 11, 2007 8:36 PM | CLM Fan ]

As BigManZam has posted in his translation guide, there are many different settings for batting:

Batting Settings
Meet Cursor - Normal, Normal Big, Area Hitting, Lock On, Zone Hitting

Normal and Normal Big are the typical default hitting cursors, Area Hitting is a cursor that is slightly larger but less defined, lock-on pretty much does what it says, and Zone Hitting would appear to be what you're looking for.

As for myself, I've just been using Normal. Just feels more like I'm able to actually control where I'm putting the ball in play that way.

haha, never mind that question

did some experimentation and found out the answer =P

anyway, can someone pls confirm whether it is all 4 shoulder buttons to increase speed or hitting any of them is enough

thx
Re: Translation Guide and Very Good Settings
[ Author: ken_hanshin | Posted: Apr 13, 2007 4:14 AM | HT Fan ]

hi, just a small question about base running

read the board and the manual, it says to increase running speed, hit R1, R2, L1, L2

does it mean i have all 4 buttons simultaneously to increase speed?

ive tried just both hitting r1 alone and all 4 buttons, in both cases, i still see the runner icon/dot flashes.
from what ive seen, i think hitting R1 alone can still increase speed

so, i would like to know which is the correct method.

thx

Hey Tomba good to see you from the GAMEFAQ board. (SN: Easyreader)

I know when I create/edit my player there is no option to use english/romanji. I just use katakana instead.

I am not sure if you have the option for Romanji in the VP shop or not.
Re: Translation Guide and Very Good Settings
[ Author: BigManZam | Posted: Apr 20, 2007 9:22 PM | CLM Fan ]

Here's an update on the options I use now.

CPU Pitching: Spirits
CPU Batting: Perfect
CPU Defense: Perfect
CPU Running: Perfect
Control Type: Digital
Pitch Speed: Middle
Batting Cursor: Normal
Pitching Cursor: Real

Use defensive shifts as much as possible. There have been many moments when I have stopped hard liners with well thought out shifts. Using shifts properly can cut down the hits you allow by 4 or 5.

I find that using the control pad with middle speed pitching allows the computer to strike me out more, and it also cuts down on the number of walks I get. Gives me less time to judge whether a pitch is going out of the zone or not.

Hi BigManZam,

First I want to thank you for the great help in this game with your translations.Even we Dutch can`t read Japanese, so this is a great help!

Have the game for a week now (PS3) and it`s a gem!
The settings you are talking about, where do I apply these? Have been snooping around in different menus in the game, but don`t seem to be able to find the possibilities in changing settings to spirits, perfect, digital etc. Maybe I am looking over them, but hope you can point me out where I`ll be able to change these settings.

Thank in advance.

Game On!
Re: Translation Guide and Very Good Settings

did you buy the advanced user setting from vpshop?
Re: Translation Guide and Very Good Settings
[ Author: Guest: Dutch-Psycho | Posted: May 1, 2007 8:24 PM ]

I bought these options:

Custom Difficulty
Additional Difficulty For Pitching/Batting
Additional Pitch Speeds
Advanced Options

SO that should be alright.
But on what pint will i apply these. When I for example go into an exhibition game, i first choose qp vs. com, and I think that I will need to adjust settings in the screen after this one, but can`t seem to find out what`s what.

Hope I ain`t putting down a "to noob" question.

Thanks in advance for your reply
